Joedodge Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 So several times here in Florida I've been throwing white or green zoom super flukes with no success I love how they fish and swim. I've tried different retrieves and rigging. Anyone else run into this? Quote
RAMBLER Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 I have had the same thing happen to me. There are times when the color does make a difference. The weather (sun, cloudy) and water clarity will cause one color to work better than another. One particular lake, I couldn't get a hit on any color except firetiger (Bitter's skip shad) in the sunny spots and then in the shade of a tree I got bit on a white fluke. Quote

Super User Scott F Posted January 25, 2015 Super User Posted January 25, 2015 I find that soft plastics that don't give off a lot of vibrations, like flukes or senkos no matter what the color, don't work well for me in stained water. I catch more fish with these in clearer water. Quote

Super User HoosierHawgs Posted January 25, 2015 Super User Posted January 25, 2015 I will say I haven't had the best luck w/Zooms u scented plastics. I don't know why.. Maybe a confidence thing? They feel good and have good action, so I still buy some of their baits, but when I do buy Zoom, I usually spray it w/scent. My go to brand is quickly becoming BIg Bite Baits though, as they have many of the same plastics w/scent for a better value. I also like their brand specific stuff, like the Warmouth, Cane Sticks, Can Thumper, and Fightin Frog. So try another brand of fluke style lure, or maybe spray some scent? Brocephus Fishing Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Try switching up your colors, flukes flat out catch fish. I typically stick to two colors (white and chartreuse glitter...the chartreuse glitter you won't be able to find unless you get them custom made and a local tackle shop I buy from does) and those two colors have worked well. I must ask, are you fishing them around any sort of structure? I have found they work best around timber and along grass lines or over the top of grass. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 25, 2015 Super User Posted January 25, 2015 Flukes are my bait to go to if i can't seem to catch anything. I have caught fish every month of they year on them. My guess is if you are new to fishing them that you are not suing enough slack line on the retrieve as you twitch and you are missing fish that are hitting your bait that you don't even know are hitting it. You gotta watch the line and if anything looks abnormal set the hook. At first you are gonna miss a bunch but after you get the hang of it, you will learn what is or isn't a fish. I also throw them in the nastiest thickest cover i can get them to drop into with lilly pads being my favorite. bottom line is they flat out catch fish... Quote

There are days where a fluke will be the bait and others where they won't look at it. If it's not happening, don't push it; move on and find the bait of the day. Quote
ChrisAW Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 I kind of have this issue. I haven't caught much on the Zoom Flukes themselves, but the Havoc Jerk shads, I have pretty good luck on. Same colors, but I seem to find more fish in the same waters with Havoc baits. Quote

Green Trout Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Clear water go with a white ice. Stained go with a dark color or hot pink. Rig them on a 5/0 EWG and you will destroy the fish. Throw around heavy cover. Also, use a medium heavy Rod for more power. Does this help? Hope it does! Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted January 26, 2015 Super User Posted January 26, 2015 Flukes are great baits. But they are not always on the menu. Throw something else in the meanwhile. Then when the conditions change and you re-introduce the fluke it will probably be the winning bait of the day. Like someone else mentioned. Don't force a bait if its not there, regardless of color. I told him he needs to register the fish with the trophycatch program, but it might be too late. So they do catch fish this time of the year! Quote

Try using them with a Gamakatsu Superline EWG weighted hook - 1/8 oz size 3/0. You can hop and pop them and let them fall. When the Zoom Super Flukes fall with this hook they sort of dart to one side or the other and the tail wiggles like a swimming fish as its falling. If the fish refuse to chase a reaction bait like a spinnerbait, chatterbait or swim jig they will often eat the super fluke rigged this way. I know most people recommend using the fluke with an unweighted hook but fishing it is too painfully slow for me. I've caught hundreds using the weighted hook and one or two that I remember on the unweighted hook. Today I got no action on reaction lures but saved the morning with 3 little guys on the fluke. I think I left just as the fish were turning on a bit as the weather warmed. But there is always tomorrow! 1 Quote

I have a ball working a jerkbait, and find it to be alot of fun. But havent caught squat yet. Im bout to give up on them. Quote
