Super User FishTank Posted January 25, 2015 Super User Posted January 25, 2015 I just finished my taxes. One way to put it, there is no joy in doing these anymore. It has become pretty cut and dry. I need a beer..... Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 25, 2015 Super User Posted January 25, 2015 I haven't got anything in the mail yet to start doing them. Not sure when but the brokerage firms don't mail out until sometime in March I think. 1 Quote

96ecss Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 My Accountant is one of my fishing buddies. When I get my taxes done, we talk about fishing the entire time. In between talking about fishing, he'll pause to ask questions about any new deductions I may have. Then it's right back to fishing talk. Even after my taxes are done, we still keep talking about upcoming fishing trips until his secretary comes in to remind him he has another customer waiting. Dave 1 Quote

Thornback Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Taxes -- the politicians never have enough of our money. Every generation allows the politicians to impose new taxes. Flat Tax or Fair Tax sounds good to me. Quote
long island basser Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 What's a refund?[/quote] Days of the "Mega-Refund" long gone? I've gotten a refund every year I've worked, that's 32 years now, even when I was single. Quote

I'm sure the government really appreciates the no interest loan you've given them the last 32 years. For me, having daddy hold my money so I don't spend it stopped when I was about 10. 2 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 25, 2015 Super User Posted January 25, 2015 I am not a fan of having anyone hold my money for free..I also had it set up where nothing was taken out pretty much and i maxed out my employee stock purchase plan and used that money to pay for taxes each year.....they gave me a 15% discount on the stock and any gains were at a lower tax rate, so in essence the company i worked for was helping pay for my taxes every year. 1 Quote

Super User FishTank Posted January 26, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 26, 2015 Days of the "Mega-Refund" long gone? No, I still got a good refund but the way the taxes are structured now the standard deduction is all a normal family can take. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Perks of being 14! No taxes whatsoever. Taxes don't go by age. I was paying them at 15. Also yes you do have taxes. Chances are you have money sitting in a bank some were. The government taxes that. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 26, 2015 Super User Posted January 26, 2015 Paying estimates most of my working life I over paid a time or 2 before the estimates were adjusted, I may have gotten a refund. Never took the money, just applied it towards the following year's taxes. Don't think I'm different than anyone else, I'd like to pay as little as possible. I do know to keep many of the services I take for granted the funding has to come from someplace. I'd like to get on airplane and know it's safe, both on a mechanical level and threats from domestic and international. I want my medications to be approved and monitored. I want my parks kept open. I want my military to be strong, local police and fire too. I want my veterans to be well cared for after they have put their lives on the line to protect us. I'll forgo listing 100 other services that I appreciate having and willing to pay for. Most people want some program to be cut, except the ones that affect their own personal lives. Back when I was working the tax rate was higher, my income higher as well, paid state income tax both personal and business. IMO big business does not like a flat tax, it's unlikely congress will ever approve one as funding for elections come from those that don't favor a flat tax. 1 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 That is why you have to get the tax return situation in writing on the custody agreement.....i have seen a few of my buddies do the same thing then went in and amended the documents so that they alternate years. 1 Quote

In FL we have no state tax, but my company office is in AL, so I get dinged in the head from them every year. Can't win. Quote

Super User Lund Explorer Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 No, I still got a good refund but the way the taxes are structured now the standard deduction is all a normal family can take. I was happy the day I didn't have enough expenses to itemize. No Mortgage Interest - No Problem! 1984? 1986? I can't remember the exact year when "Itemized Deductions" took the biggest hit. I actually had a client that was very upset that he could no longer write off the $20k in credit card interest he had for that year. Hard to believe that so much debt could be considered a good thing! Doing taxes for others gives a person a real insight into how people live. It also showed me that there was very little I could do to make any of them happy. Whether they got money back or had to write a check to their uncle, at the end of the day, it was still a chore that none of them enjoyed. 1 Quote
