Super User Jeff H Posted January 25, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 25, 2015 How do the TD-A's compare to modern baitcasters like the citica, curado, pq, etc.? There were many variants of the TD-A's over the years. The culmination was the HSTA. Opinions will vary but mine is that this reel is one of those timeless designs that ANY angler can pick up and do well with. Slightly bigger and heavier (8.5 oz) than the trends of today (smaller & lighter) it will do it all except fish lighter lures well. I have thrown 1/4 oz jigs with mine at times but that is getting just outside it's abilities. Go over to Tackle Tour and find the review of the HSTA, it's good reading. Have you ever fished a Daiwa with their MagForce-Z braking system? Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 25, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 25, 2015 1016 huh? Nice to know. Picked up a spare 105H not long ago, and am in the process of trying to buy an HLC. Guess now I will be forced to look at the 1016. There is some difference in braking profile going on with this spool that I just loved. I think that's what was. Whatever, I liked it a lot. It would cast into the wind better than anything I've ever experienced before too. Just very versatile. Quote

Super User Jeff H Posted January 25, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 25, 2015 It's a magnetic system with a centrifugal component. In my opinion it's simple, unique, genius and very effective. It is one of 2 things that made me switch solely to Daiwa. Very effective braking system. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 25, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 25, 2015 I vote wear it out!! I'm gonna Mike. I already worked a trade with Tim S for the 100M handle it needs Quote

Hogsticker Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Even if you did shelf it, how long g do you honestly think it would sit there? Staring at it every day. I couldn't do it. Fish it! 1 Quote

TorqueConverter Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Jeff H can I get the tl:dr on the TD-Z including the Fuego? I can't help but feel like I'm missing out on being ignorant of these reels. I'm guessing they're an oldie but a goodie Daiwa platrom with lots of spool options, some frame material options (fuego) with something special. Hows the smoothness and noise on the reels? How do they hold up? Are they special beyond just being Magforce Z reels? I know reels like the last gen Exceler were notorios for becoming grindy and noisy but they're not the same platform as the TD-Zs. Waht do they bring to the table that a Tatula can't? Quote
Hogsticker Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Nostalgia, pitching light baits, magnesium, legendary status. One of the most classic sought after reels of all time. It's like comparing a 69 camaro to a 2013. The answer to that for me is easy. They just don't make em like they use to. Quote
