Hey guys,

Looking to pick up a new Jig rod and crank bait rod. I was planning on going with the champion series Dobyns. I am mostly throwing squarebills and casting jigs in clear water. Anyone have suggestions on a good casting jig rod and a squarebill rod.

Thanks

I fish 3/8 to 1/2 oz. Not much more than that. Most of the time its in open water on drop offs. Lots of grass edges. I have another rod to fish the thick stuff with. This is mostly for casting in open water.

I like the 733 for that stuff.

I'm surprised, I thought for sure you would recommend the 744.

That starts another debate. Im thinking about trying out a glass rod. Ive heard great things about dobyns glass rods. What do you use?

For open water, I like the softer tip on the 733. Plus the 744 is a DX.

Man I completely missed he wanted a Champion. 3 power in a Champion starts to get a little iffy at 1/2oz for me I usually go to the 734 right about that weight.

705 CB glass fast action rod is my all around cranking rod. Also a great topwater rod for bigger spooks and poppers. Can do 90% of what I need it to less deep cranking.

What do you notice as far as the difference with a glass rod?

Glass helps keeps fish pinned on the treble hook baits. They have a similar graphite rod in their cranking line of rods but I havent used it. It doesnt fish like glass rods of the past which were heavy thick blanked rod that lacked feel. The 705 cb glass rod I belive is a graphite / glass blend. When I was searching for a rod to accomplish this I found this rod had high praises. The folks at Dobyns would point you in the right direction and could give you a good recommendation. A friend who cranks much more than I do has 4 of these. Wait for 15-20% off sale and snag one then.

I have the 705cb glass. What I noticed is more fish landed in the boat. The glass keeps thos fish buttoned up really nice and still has enough backbone when you need to horse something out of moderate cover. Its an amazing rod. One of my favorites that I own.

I like graphite in general or composite for deep cranks, but it really is a personal decision, I will say that glass rods have come a long way from the old heavy glass rods of years back.

What line type you plan on using for your crankbaits?

I was planning on using 12 lb flouro. What do you suggest?

I like the FC option for med and deep running crankbaits, although I am certainly not against using a good Co-poly line either.

Reason I asked there are several here that like braid for cranking, I think a glass rod would work well with the lack of any stretch in braid. I prefer the FC and graphite for general cranking duties. I think it just really comes down to how each person prefers to tackle it.

Here's my $.02

For the first part, I have the DX745, love it to death. I've heard great things about the D735 from my teammates. In regards to a crankbait rod, I've got my eyes on the 764CB, it is graphite cuz I dislike glass haha!

I like glass better b/c they deflect cranks off the bottom more softly so they seem to stall more during a pause. i tend to crank too fast as is so the glass fits my personality.  on the other side composite is far more sensitive so you can feel every bump on the bottom. some guys prefer this.

as mentioned glass keeps bass pegged so that's a bonus if you like to put too much pressure on them. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend glass.  i just sold my dobyns 805 cbrm b/c i like the glass so much better

I gotta get a 634 first though. Need a jerkbait rod for Table Rock.

735c is the ultimate all around jig rod from dobyns. I also have a 766flip  saavy thats pretty decent but not as great as its champion and DX counterparts. As for the crankbait rod I can vouch for dobyns glass rods, they keep fish pegged. As I stated above I'll probably get a 705cbglass to replace my current shallow crank rod.

In the champion line I would look into the 734c and the 705cb graphite.  I am just a graphite fan when it comes to cranks overall.  If you're in clear water not around much cover the 734c will be good but if you end up around any heavy grass or cover I would possibly look into the 735c for a little extra power.
