It's a matter of preference until it becomes a point of "status" I ride in a road cycling club here in Central IN. There are always those couple of guys who've always got the latest $15K race Tour De France bike. One or two of them don't make much fuss about it, they just enjoy the technical aspect of having the newest technology available. But then a couple of the will flat out look down their nose at you because your ride is 3yrs old and only cost $8K....yes...that's a thing. Those kinds are irritating. I love it when us "inferior" riders put em' in their place. Am I a bit jealous?....probably....but I'm satisfied....LOL until I see my fishing buddy with a new Curado I....me with a G.....then I might have to get one and ask forgivness from the wife later. Road cyclists are the absolute worst on that for sure. I have similar experiences but i don't ride with a club. Nothing better than running into those types on a ride and they ask if they can ride along for a while and when they are in the front you can tell they are working hard but when it is your turn you turn it up even more Quote
fvogel67 Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 I have some new stuff,But actually prefer older reels. I'm a big fan of older Japanese made Shimano spinning reels. Symetres,Sidestabs and Stradics Quote

My road bike is so old it only has 6 gears on the cog, old school cantilever brakes and the clicking latches and treads on my mid end blue sidi dominator shoes have broken off due to being too old, lol. There was was nothing sweeter than smoking them on a ride and it’s even sweeter when you smoke them on a mountain bike without slicks... on the street. It’s the engine, not the bike. Miguel indurain would kick their rears with a huffy. It’s the angler, not the gear. In the words of Warpath, BAM! POW! Conversely, I also won’t judge them and be a reverse snooty dude and look down upon them for using higher end gear. To each his own. Quote
optimator Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 I don't care what other people spend their money on. They don't pay my bills ? 2 Quote

Let's just change the site name to CycleResource. I got into road racing after watching Lemond chase down Boyer within sight of the finish line to only have Saronni rocket past everyone to win the 1982 World Championship. I was hooked. The "types" of participants in every sport are almost identical and span from the "grouchy retro guy" to the "latest and greatest clueless incapables" and everything in between. To each his own, it's part of the fun. Quote

I'm looking to get back into cycling for the health benefits. Although the days of doing century-plus rides (that 100 miles in a day for those who don't ride, lol) are probably long since passed, it doesn't mean we can't still enjoy a good ride. Quote

bhoff Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 I don't agree with people that buy things just to have, that idea is just silly. Honestly, that is why so many people struggle with debt and paying off credit cards in the US and its sad. There is no reason to buy a new year model of product x each time one is put out. Especially not with rods or reels. Until materials such as graphene can be mass produced I doubt there will be any significant advancements in rod technology. As far as electronics the same applies, the law of diminishing returns proves this. On 1/21/2015 at 10:30 AM, Preytorien said: I ride in a road cycling club here in Central IN. There are people with more expensive wheels than my entire bike yet I can still drop them. The bike doesn't make the cyclist, similarly, the tackle/electronics doesn't make the angler. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted May 25, 2018 Super User Posted May 25, 2018 I try to buy decent rods and reels so I will have them a long time. Unless a new model has something to offer that my current gear can't do, and it would have to be something fairly significant as well, I'm not going to run out to buy the latest gear. If I am adding a new rod and reel to my lineup, I will look at the latest gear. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted May 25, 2018 Super User Posted May 25, 2018 I mainly fish with outdated models at clearenced prices. My rods are LEWS. My spinning reels vary between okuma, fin nor, globe, viva. My baitcasters are US Reel. when I started bass fishing I had a 5’ med action rod from a tag sale in Maine just $5. That was my lucky rod it caught lots of bass with my skill of course. Then it was bubble pack quantum spinning reels at Walmart. I started out being frugal. Quote
