I just really started fishing as an adult a couple of years back and am so glad I did.  I started out with a couple of the $25 Bass Pro Shops spinning combos and they served me relatively well.  Last year I wanted to invest in a setup for crankbait fishing.  I posted on these forums and get some really good feedback regarding the proper setup for both the rod and the reel.  I settled on an Abu Garcia Veritas rod and one of their Silvermax reels.  I know there are better out there, but it fell in line with my budget.  I have been very pleased.

My question is this, I see many experienced fishermen who have special setups for multiple situations.  For example, there are guys that have setups for frogging, for worm fishing, etc.  For someone relatively new to fishing, the amount of combinations is kind of staggering.

Would you guys mind sharing some of your rod and reel setups and what special purpose you use them for?  I think I can gain a great deal of education on the topic by hearing what some of you experienced anglers take with you when you fish and what you use it for.  Thank in advance for the feedback!

I have 3 rods:

6'6" m-mf

6'10" mh-f

6'6" spinning

I use the 6'10" mh-f 95% of the time. It works great for everything I do.

I'm always tinkering with my lineup.  Here is my main setups on a daily basis though.

Spinning:

Fenwick Aetos - 7' M/F paired with a Stradic 2500 FJ with 15lb braid.  I use this for weightless plastics or deep water drop shot.

Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth - 6'8 M/XF paired with a Symetre FI2500 with 10lb braid.  This is my main fluke rod, drop shot and splitshot.

I carry these two all the time.  Both very versatile in all types of situations in a pinch.

Casting:

G Loomis GL2 - 893C paired with a Curado 200G7 30lb braid, this is my bladed bait rod and top water.

Shimano Cumara - 6'8" MH/F paired with a Curado 50E, 8lb Floroclear this is my up to 1/4 to 1/2 oz jig/plastics rod.

Shimano Sellus - 7'2" MH/MF paired with Citica G6 30lb braid, my crankbait setup shallow to medium.

Abu Garcia Veritas - 7'3" MH/F paired BPS PQ 50lb braid frog rod and flipping and pitching.

I have 11 more rods that I will mix and match, either because of the situation or because I feel like hey I haven't used you lately. Keep in mind even though they have a primary role most of them are interchangeable.  Example, my GL2 can act as a back up frog rod.

A spinning rod,

a crankbait Rod

A mh with 40lb braid.

Mind you, I generally fish by myself, so I am not concerned about someone else stepping on gear that I've got spread around the boat.   If I step on gear I've got spread around the boat - shame on me.

Here is what I carry - generally - extremely subject to change:

A finesse spinning rod

A couple of spinner bait rods

A frogging rod - doubles as a A-rig rod

A finesse drop shot rod

A couple of bubba drop shot rods

A rod rigged with a rattle bait

A rod rigged with a square bill

A rod rigged with some top water bait - generally a popper, but maybe a spook or a buzz bait

A medium duty jig rod, rigged with 15 lb fluorocarbon

A heavier duty jig rod - rigged with 17 lb fluorocarbon

A finesse jig rod - rigged with 10 lb abrazx

A jerkbait rod ( generally spinning gear)

A tx rig senko rod (spinning gear with braid & fluorocarbon leader)

A wacky senko rod.

A swim bait rod.

I carry a rod for Timber Tigers the DC 13 & DC 16 models.   Currently I am using a MH spinning rod with a kind of limber tip for this.  Braid and a fluorocarbon leader set up.  I've used bait casters for this in the past, but last year I tried the spinning gear - to deal with the wind and get better distance mostly and it has worked out ok so far.

I'm sure I am forgetting some.  If I bring someone else along in my boat I cut down the number of rigs some - to decrease clutter.  What I cut depends on seasonal patterns.

When I co-angle in some one else's boat, it is 5 or 6, maybe 7 rods tops.   Depends on what & where I'm fishing.

When I was fishing BFL's as a co-angler, I'd bring a dozen or more rods and the evening before the tournament, cull down to half a dozen, based on the plan for the next day.

You have probably seen this since it's stickied in the rod/reel forum, but in case you haven't, I think its a great read and tries to answer your questions:

http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/130634-rod-selection-the-basics/

The whole point is, you don't NEED technique specific gear to fish most presentations.

For some it is just MORE FUN to have the perfect rig. I think a few lure classes require

special gear if you are going to spend a lot of time fishing that way. Deep diving crankbaits,

big swimbaits and The Rig come to mind.

I'd have to agree with roadwarrior.  Other then the few techniques he listed, most of everything else can honestly be covered with a 7'MH casting rod.  The more you fish, the more you find combo's that work for you and refine your equipment.  I got back into bass fishing 4yrs ago and started out with 2 rods, 1 6ft and 1 7ft both med action.  Then moved up to a 7'MH, then a better 7'MH.  Now I can't tell you how many and what set ups I have. But I need a new floor rod rack.

I wont bore you with my setups as many have been covered in this thread

Just be warned that once you start getting specific gear it becomes a slippery slope...and d**n fast lol

it is out of control in my house ad of late lol

here's what I generally carry: a 6.3:1 baitcaster on a medium heavy or heavy rod(depending on what company made it) for jigs,t-rigs,chatterbaits,frogs&bigger spinnerbaits.a 5:1 baitcaster on a medium power moderate to moderate fast rod for crankbaits, lipless crankbaits&medium to small spinnerbaits.another 5:1 on a heavy rod for swimbaits(don't use it very often though)& a 2500 size spinning reel on a medium light or medium rod for lighter t-rigs, jigheads ,topwaters &very small spinnerbaits.

As has been covered already, by no means do you have to have specific set ups.  It all depends how particular you are.  I get particular with a lot of baits, but if I'm practicing, fun fishing or even just in a buddy's boat I don't worry about my setups as much.  Their are some exceptions for me such as frog fishing I have to have the right rod, reel and line.
I'll post some of my setups just for giggles:

Dobyns Champion Extreme dx744fh - Curado E - 16lb Sunline Sniper - JIGS (also heavy dropshot around grass)
Dobyns Champion Extreme dx744fh - Citica 200e - 15lb Maxima - SPINNERBAIT

Dobyns Champion Extreme x743s spinning - Shimano Symetre 3000 - 7lb sunline sniper - DARTHEADS/TUBES/SENKOS 1

Dobyns Champion Extreme dx743s spinning - Shimano Symetre 3000 - 7lb sunline sniper - DARTHEADS/TUBES/SENKOS 2
Dobyns Champion Extreme dx702s spinning - Shimano Symetre 3000 - 7lb sunline sniper - DROPSHOT
Dobyns Champion Extreme dx795 - Tatula high speed - 70lb Daiwa Samurai braid - FLIPPIN, PITCHIN, PUNCH
Dobyns Champion Extreme dx746 - Tatula Type-R high speed 8.1 - 70 lb Daiwa Samurai Braid - BUZZBAIT/FROG
Dobyns Champion 736c - Tatula Type-R high speed 8.1 - 70lb Daiwa Samurai Braid - FROG
Dobyns Champion 804cb - Shimano Citica 6.3:1 - 20lb Sunline Sniper - CHATTERBAITS
Dobyns Champion 806CB - Tatula HD 7.0:1 - 15lb Maxima - A-RIG, SMALL SWIMBAITS
Dobyns Champion 705CB - Shimano Curado 200e7 - 12lb Sunline Sniper - LARGE RIPBAITS (pointer 128)
Dobyns Champion 704CB - Shimano Curado 200e7 - 10lb Sunline Sniper - RIPBAITS (vision 110,Staysee90)
Dobyns Champion 705CB - Shimano Citica 200e - 15lb Maxima - SQUAREBILL CRANKS
Dobyns Champion 734c - Daiwa Tatula HD 8.0:1 - 70lb braid/15lb maxima leader - SPOOK 1
Dobyns Champion 734c - Daiwa Tatula HD 8.0:1 - 70lb braid/15lb Maxima leader - SPOOK 2
Dobyns Champion 764c - Shimano Citica 200e - 15lb Maxima - SPINNERBAIT (around heavy cover/grass)

I've left off my 2 swimbait rods which have 25lb mono and throw my large swimbaits 8" and over.
