Hi everyone,

Every year I make a "fishing" trip to Door County, Wisconsin. Some years I fair out better than others. Does anybody fish near this area? If so, where do you guys fish? What do you catch there?

Let me know for all the input,

Andy

Unfortunately, I can't speak to how it is recently. I grew up in Sturgeon Bay many years ago and it was terrific Salmon fishing.

It probably depends on what time of year you go. I have some friends who go in May for a pre-spawn smallmouth bite. Last year, numbers were down due to the late ice out, but they get some big smallies, and they wade for them!

I go in the summer, around July-August. Yes, the fishing was very minimal last year due to the winter. Hopefully this year will bring some more bites.

I was up there the 2nd weekend of June last year and fishing was pretty good.  Fish could be found in prespawn, on beds, and post spawn.

With all of the attention aimed toward Sturgeon Bay as far as media goes, there were a lot of boats.  I personally like taking my kayak out of Peninsula State Park and fish up there.  Typically the more North you go, the less pressure.

DW,

Just have to tell you I love your profile pic. My wife and I are ISU grads and season ticket holders. Having a great winter at Hilton. Two things I love fishing and Cyclone basketball.

You resemble bass1980.  :)

Like JoeyBass, I offer no value to your inquiry....just wanted to add that I too spent a lot of time fishing in Door County, but many, many years ago and all on the inland waters.  In the 60's and 70's, my family vacationed on Kangaroo Lake every summer for many years.  Was a decent enough walleye and bass fishery back then.   Nothing big, but numbers were reliable...at least for walleye, perch and bluegill.   Clark Lake wasn't too bad, either.  Don't think I ever fished Mud.

My friend and I were thinking about taking our kayaks up to Door County for some smallmouth fishing. Peninsula State Park looks very beautiful, but how's the smallmouth fishing up there? Thanks!

An often overlooked fish that is found in numbers up there is sheepshead. They get huge and pull pretty darn hard too.

I live on Winnebago...if I want big ol sheepshead, I'll just dump the boat in here rather than drive 2 hrs and catch them there lol.

I pretty much only fish with my kayak there, primarily due to fewer pleasure boats.  I have caught some brutes there, and if you are available, head up there the 2nd week of June.  Plenty of fish up shallow by the kayak/canoe launch so you don't have to paddle as far or battle wind as much.

But now I have a bass boat, so I anticipate my kayak fishing days up there are going to be very rare.

If you do head up, Look into a day trip to the Mink River. You're welcome :wink2:

Awesome, thanks for your help! Do you happen to know if Peninsula State Park has camping areas?

Door County/Sturgeon Bay is an unbelievable fishery. It can be good from the opening day until ice up, but the best fishing is from mid-May until 4th of July. Fish can be caught in all phases during this time, and caught shallow. Swimming a grub or tube, and a jerkbait can be great early in the season. As the water warms spinnerbaits, topwater and dropshot become major players. Water is gin clear with visibility of 20' being common.   In the spring the southern bays like Little Sturgeon, Rileys and Sand will be a lot warmer depending on wind direction than the northern bays and the main bay.
