What should I use my beagle for? Hog hunting is out of the question. I already have squirrel dogs. So I guess he could tag along with them sometimes. I will be using him and his sometime soon beagle wife for coyotes with our mastiff. I know they are supposed to be phenomenal with rabbits. However, I've never hunted rabbits and don't know the first thing about it. Any suggestions?

How about a house pet for the kids?

Slow and Easy, we have coyotes all over central Virginia.

One of my neighbors swears he saw one behind my house.

We did have sightings of two bobcats by the guy who hunts deer behind my home.

I have not seen either, but do watch the red and gray foxes run around in the field at dusk.

I put the rest of the Christmas turkey along the berm for the foxes when my wife said it was time to say goodbye to the turkey.

Hope they enjoyed it.

I'm in the burbs and have a small lake and forest preserve less than a mile from the house. I see yotes on occasion. A couple years back a buddy and I were butchering a deer in the garage and had the door open. A yote with a radio collar came to the bottom of the driveway and stared at us for about 30 seconds before running off. Guess he was hungry.

Beagles that I have been around run their yap nonstop, which is fitting in this situation. Maybe you should train it to shut up.... You know, a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of situation.

He finally figured out how to bay a couple weeks ago. I think my brothers Bagel Hound (half beagle, half basset) taught him how to. I personally like it when he bays. Almost as much as listening to my old coon hound. (She was a Blood Hound, Great Dane mix. She was one of the best coon dogs I've ever owned.)

Rabbits and squirrels but in cold weather only, too many parasites.  I would say keep it as a pet.  One other thing, be careful what you feed these things.  They will not stop eating if you leave them food.  They can eat until they die of consumption, especially when they are competing against another dog for food.

Very interesting about the food. I was unaware of that.
