And someone will probably jump on my back for saying this, but I prefer it to my shimanos  :rolleyes7:  (please don't kill me)

A little over your budget but the Stradic Ci4 and Ci4+ has the Black and Red Motiff.

I have the Rarenium Ci4 (its Japanese cousin) drag is smooth.

What makes the ci4 worth the 230 ill pay it if its worth it

hahaha. i'm in a good mood so I won't. haha.i'll recommend a shimano saros since your wanting a black one. if grey will work then a sahara, i'm really liking mine so far . smoothest drag I've ever used on a spinning reel in that price range.

Its more a personal preference for me (shimano user for 20+ years) I also use other brands (daiwa, abu) but I gravitate more on shimanos.  Suggest to check it out on your local store if they have it or ask a buddy who has it and fish with it a few times.

Look for a discontinued CI4. They should be in your price range. I picked up a 3000 for under $150 when they went on clearance.

Wait for a sale, or look for an excellent condition used, Stradic CI4+. It's worth the extra over the old CI4. Very smooth reel, lightweight, and has a very smooth drag.

If it were me I'd be looking at a Supreme 30, more line capacity, lighter, more ipt, less expensive and I prefer a paddle knob.

Penn Conflict.  Why wait for if and when a reel goes on sale because the maker decides its outdated and clearances it?  Why buy a reel and have it be automatically outdated?  The Revo spinners are very smooth and mine have been tougher than the pitiful CI4's were.  They've handles much bigger fish, their only down side is the modular takedown is not easy to work on.  The Penn is basically a Pfeluger made for tougher conditions and you have the insurance that it comes from a company that has a history of keeping spare parts available for decades and bend over backwards customer service.

I have a Pflueger supreme and a stradic fj. Both are excellent choices for a spinner. Idk if the ci4 is worth the extra $ over an fj.

Although I've haven't used the SX I own 3 Premiers and have used the Revo S. Knowing that the SX falls in between those two, I know it's gotta be an awesome reel.

You don't have to wait for a reel to be discontinued to go on sale. There's a sale on every major holiday. That allows someone to buy a better product that was previously over their budget. Every company keeps parts long after a reel is gone.

This is not 100% true.

There is a difference between ordering parts and sending a reel in for repair.  The repair facility will have the parts, but to order a part to fix reel yourself that part may be out of stock on back order.

That can be true, even for brand new reels on the market.

2500CI4, no parts from shimano for almost 2 years right after it came out.

Curado D, no parts from shimano 5 months after it was succeeded by the E.

I she no logic in buying into shimano's 'buy last years model cheap' sales.

But you better hurry, you won't find a better deal, and the Ci4 I wouldn't rec amend over a Symetry,,,, but the Ci4+ as stated earlier, is a whole other story, I have it and the same size as a Sustain FG, and can't tell the difference in the two other than color!! It is nicer than my FJ Stradics!!

I have a stradic fj that's been out of service for almost 8 months now. Waiting on out of stock parts from shimano for a reel that's still in production. But they would be glad to charge me to fix it if I send it to them. They somehow magically have the parts if i send the reel to them.

Same here but they wanted me to send it to a middleman repair center.  Then pay labor and the price of the part with the middlemans mark up.  A shimano will never touch my hands again.

Hmm...

I have been fishing Shimano since 1997 and have never had an issue of any kind. I consider their

Customer Service a model for every company. Bantam 1 (Dan Thorburn) is the man in charge and

you can talk with him directly: Phone number (949) 951-5003

I had problems with a new shimano reel once and contacted him. He told me the turn around time would be over a month if i sent it in to shimano. He told me to just go buy a new reel of the same model somewhere and return the problem reel if I wanted it back sooner.

What stellar customer service!

Please elaborate on why you consider their customer service to be a model for other companies.

I am not big on Shimano's Customer Service either but that does not mean I don't like their reels or will it stop me from recommending them.  The few times I have called, I get the sense that they are overwhelmed with work and short on answers to their own problems.  As far as service goes, I have sent one reel to them over the years and it came back in fantastic, better than new condition (Calais reel by the way) but it took months.  As far as parts goes, I called a local tackle shop and they had all of what I need for my old bantam curado 201 bsf.  As far as the future goes, I think I'll be sending my reels to guys like DVC if I need to but so far all of my Shimano reels are in perfect working order (some are 8 years old and no parts replaced).

If you want to see what Shimano service is like watch the first few minutes of this video.  You will see just how many reels they have to go through and this video is five years old. There are actually 5 parts to this and they are all very informative.

Back to the OP question though.  Shimano Stradic....
