Getting Ready To Place My Spring Order

When I was in college, my roommates and I would gather 'round the Bass Pro catalog every January and place a giant order (you know, when you had to call and give an operator item numbers).  A couple of years ago, I started up that tradition again (although maybe Tackle Warehouse this year   ).

 

Last year, every bass I caught was on either a Senko (and some other senko-ish stick baits), Crankbait, or live worm (at a kids' tourney with the boys).  I honestly did not catch a bass on anything else all season.  For that reason, I didn't buy anything else all year.

 

This year, I need to add some variety to my tackle box.  I ordered some jigs and trailers mid-summer last year but didn't have any success.  I am looking to add some spinnerbaits primarily.  I have a couple that I tried from time to time last year with no success.  That is odd since in years past, I caught tons of fish with them.  I also had no success with swim baits, but I'm new to them and still learning how they work.

 

So, I will be ordering:

 

- A new rig (medium/heavy spinning I think)

-Line

-Terminal tackle (hooks mostly)

-Spinnerbaits - suggestions?

-Some new cranks - suggestions?

-Anything else that we think will work in north GA - suggestions?

Not sure about N Ga. But these work for me in N Tx

Baby brush hog in some kind of watermelon color for TX Rig

Picasso or Buckeye Spot Remover shaky head and a Hags Tornado for the bait

Don't give up on jigs. There is a lot of information on these forums on how to fish them. I bank fish and found going from 3/8 to 1/4 or even smaller like a Strike King Bitsy Bug 3/16 was the trick.

Keitech Swing Impact for a swimbait.

Maybe add a top water like a popper.

I know fenwick has replaced the eliteTech smallmouth rod with a bass rod but if you can find a eliteTech smallmouth rod it is far and away my favorite spinning rod.  For reels I like daiwa and quantum.

 

If your going to use a medium heavy spinning setup I would recommend braid, either 15-20# Power Pro or sufix 832.

 

Hooks are a toolbox. use the right hook for the right bait. you should have, for a medium-heavy setup, i would have 3/0 thru 5/0 EWG and offset hooks and maybe some specialty hooks like tube jig hooks. swimbait hooks.

 

You should have a variety of double blade, single blade, willow blade, colorado blade, silver blade, gold blade, chartreuse skirt, black and blue.  I like strike king, booyah, and war eagle brands.  I like the spinnerbaits with the jewel eyes instead of the painted on ones.

 

I have had success with storm arashi, bandit, rat-l-trap, strike king, yo-zuri, and rapala scatterrap.

Spinnerbaits I am going to try the War Eagle series this year.  I hate saying that being an Alabama fan.

 

Cranks I am going to go to the Rapala DT series.

Thanks guys.  I haven't given up on the jigs at all.  I'm looking forward to fishing as early as possible this spring with them.  Where I do most of my weekly fishing, they are just not a good option.  When I can get out on a boat, which I do once or twice each spring and then fall, I'll be using the jigs a lot.

I really focused on jigs in the latter part of this last season, really going to fish them more this next season, as well as flukes, lizards, and craws.

I mainly caught bass on worms last year, looking to change that. That's my game plan.

I am loving the Yo-zuri hardbaits lately, just got em and the sashimi topwaters are great, the walker sits flat and walks great, the small flat 3ds crank is small but casts a mile and you can burn em and they are flat sided ton of flash, sashimi is great for suspending and minnow baits, square bills, wakes, plus all have japanese quality hooks, long cast systems, and fish great out of box...I think fish are not used to them, I also love the spro squarebills, again, gammys and ready to go out of the box, also some sebile lures are a must.

Crankbaits, I like Lucky Craft.  For a jerkbait, again Lucky Craft.  You can't beat a the 100 or 128 size in American Shad or Aurora Black

 

Soft Plastic, the Fat Ika and Zoom Lizards

 

Spinner Baits, I like the old school ones from Rooster Tail and Mepps.  They may not be consistent but they are fun and you never know what you are going to catch.

 

Again for fun, a topwater popper.  I like the Mega Bass Pop X and the Pop Max.  They are pricey but I have never lost one and they catch fish.
