tracker01 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I am about to pull the trigger on the Supreme 8230mgx but after doing some research on this site it seems that the President gets allot more talk. I know that there is a price difference but other than that? Advantages or disadvantages? This reel would be used for LM & SM fishing. Quote

The magnesium frame and stem is much more rigid, the drag system is sealed. The spool is a little more aggressively ported, but most of the rest of the reel is very similar. Gander Mountain has the MG on sale, as does I believe Cabela's. 2 Quote
Djman72 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I own both, and both are fantastic. President is a workhorse that'll last forever. I've used it for for panfish all the way up to steelhead/pike. The supreme is a bit smoother and lighter, but not a huge jump from the President. Go to a store that has both and check them out. The best test for a rod/reel is to have it in your hands. Good Luck! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 14, 2015 Global Moderator Posted January 14, 2015 I've owned/own both, the price difference isn't worth it to me. If you can get one of the old supremes on sale though, I would buy it. 1 Quote
BigSkyBasser Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Bought my girlfriend a president for xmas and it is the darkhorse of performance spinning gear. After fishing it for a a month I have a hard time giving my revo any attention. I would start with the president and if you like it, you could easily justify upgrading to the supreme and having both in your arsenal. Quote
georgeyew Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Check out Dick's also. If they have any MGX left, they should be on sale. Quote

I think this reel is being discontinued, hence the low prices, I'd probably buy the supreme if the deal was right. If not the president will perform just as well. 1 Quote

The Patriarch, Supreme XT and Supreme MGX are all being replaced with new models of the same reels. They have them for order on the TW site. I checked the Pflueger website and they still show the old reels but strangely do not have the MGX listed any longer. Not sure what that means. Quote

jbw252 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I have a President 6735, a Supreme 9025XT, and a Supreme 8025MG. I tend to use the President more often - it's quite a workhorse. You won't be disappointed getting one. Quote
bearcatdad26 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Thats all I fish with and I have all of them and the real differance is weight. If you like a little weight go with the trion or Pres both great reels. If you want lighter go with the supreme. The drag is the best you will find and from 7 bearings to 10 the all feel the same. Super User FishTank Posted January 16, 2015 Super User Posted January 16, 2015 I just bought the supreme and it seems like a fine reel. I have fished the old president and I liked it but my overall impression was> good solid work horse reel and great buy at the price but I was not overwhelmed. When I went to purchase my new reel, I was looking just a basic reel at a good price. The president was exactly what I wanted. When I went Gander Mountain the Supreme was just a few dollars more, so why not. I can't wait to fish it. At first glance though, it is lighter, slightly smoother, and it feels a little bit better machined. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I own 2 Presidents and 2 Supremes. Both are excellent and never had a problem with either. I would highly recommend either one. I started with the Presidents and was so happy with them....I "stepped" up to the Supremes and am very happy. There are slight differences as previously mentioned. I am just waiting for a TW sale to buy another Supreme since I just bought myself a TW gift card at 10% off...lol.. you can't/won't be disappointed with either one. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 16, 2015 Super User Posted January 16, 2015 I have a president and have never had any issues. I am thinking about getting another one this spring. Quote
PAGreg Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 I just bought a supreme mgx and could not believe how much grease was packed in that sucker. It was a different reel by the time I cleaned it and and relubed. Consider that when checking them out at the store. Quote
