NAbassman Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I am new to winter fishing,so any advice would be appreciated. I am going fishing next week on lake guntersville, how do y'all tackle a lake.Where do y'all start, I was thinking about starting on main lake points and creek channels. Am I wrong for starting there? JohnnyFishing Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 While our locations are totally different, Alabama compared to Chicago, my buddy and I have had some success with early season open water fishing. Unfortunatly now the lakes and ponds are completely iced over but we had a few days of good weather where we caught some nice bass and pike. Main creek channels and main points on the lake seem to be good places to start. Technique wise we have had success with working jerkbait and Rapala x-raps fairly slowly. Long pauses and not as aggressive jerks as you would have in the summer. We also had some success with jigs. Just running them slowly across the bottom. Again I'm not sure if this is any help coming from an angler on the much colder side of the country but it could be worth a try. Good luck to you! Very jealous of you as I look out the window at snow! Quote

sprint286 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I look for large rock ,rip rap, and steep rocky banks within my selected area . jigs jerkbaits and crankbaits work best for me. for jigs I use a pea shaped head 3/8 is a good starting size depending on depth . don't forget to look shallow especially if you have had a few warm days in a row . fish areas that get hit with sunlight the longest . jerkbaits are good when the sun is shinning it pulls the fish up to catch some heat while cloudy days they tend to relate to the bottom. I have never been to G.ville but these are general winter fishing tips . rock and sun are key for me in the winter. Quote
Acwood04 Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Suspended Fish in deeper water relating to timber most likely, good drop offs, rocky banks (because the rock absorbs the sunlight and warms the water) bass can be caught in the shallows behind an isolated stump or something, on a crank bait banging the rock, or a jig, drop shot or texas rigged worm.. Good luck Quote
