Joedodge Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 So I got some power pro line for my who and spinning real like suggested. I backed it with my Trilene big game, and spooled it on in the direction of my reel and held tight in my fingers with a rag. I made some practice casts real quick, I noticed that throwing a texas rigged super worm with no weight if I don't manually close the bail some line wants to fall off the spool and it doesn't seem like it spools onto the reel tightly.this is pretty much my first expierence fishing weightless worms and my first braid expierence. Smokinal Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I think there is a couple of things going on. As Mark said, I, too, think you may have just a few winds too many on the spool. I always close the bail by hand anyway, every cast, and that can help too. And it does take a couple of days out for it to loosen up a little. But the biggest thing is that you were throwing a weightless worm...it's the weight, or your hand in a rag, to put tension on the line as it comes in so naturally it's going to lay a little loose. Joedodge Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 I'll pull some off the spool, so when it lays back on the spool loose after casting while fishing are you guys just periodically using a rag and relighting get it while your out on the water? It's a shimano side stab 4000 10 pound 200 yard spool. It's standard moss green power pro 20 pound. Grabbed what Walmart had since I had a gift card Quote
Smokinal Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Yup, if I'm throwing something light and it starts to looses up, I'll make a long cast with the wind, hold the rod up the blank a little with the line running through my fingers and re wind it up. It's very rare I have to do that though. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 10, 2015 Super User Posted January 10, 2015 I probably spool my freshwater reels about 1/8" from the lip, just to get started. In short order either the line compress a little bit or I remove some, I like my reels to be about 1/4" or a little more from the lip. I don't see any difference in casting distance, usually not casting anymore than 10-15 yards anyway. Quote

Super User BassinLou Posted January 10, 2015 Super User Posted January 10, 2015 It's not overspooled. But it's pretty close. I prefer my spinners spooled just the way your picture depicts. Like Mark and others have already mentioned, braid takes a few outings to soften a bit. When its new like that, I can see how it can be springy. In your case, just take off several feet and the problem should go away. Keep in mind since your new to braid and your so use to mono; mono is very springy. Braid has 0 stretch. You may have to adjust your drag and/or your hooksets to accomodate for this. There is a little learning curve, but once you get adjusted to it, you will be alright. Good luck. Quote

Super User gulfcaptain Posted January 10, 2015 Super User Posted January 10, 2015 May put some KVD Line Conditioner on it as well. If you are fishing out of a boat, let it out while idling without anything tied on and use the water resisance to help put it back on the reel tighter. This also gets any twists out as well. And I agree with the "always close the bail manually". It reduces line twist as well. Quote
