Where do you buy the wood? I saw where Jann's or one of them sold pieces of balsa that were 1" x 1".

Make sure you ask for balsa that is 12-14 lb/cuft in weight.  Lighter wood isn't worth a flip.

 Do you use split rings for the line ties or do you tie directly to the front of the bait?

Snap, I personally use duolock snaps on my baits, but I put split rings on the baits I sell.
