SteveF Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 First of all, I would like to thank everyone for there all the great reading I have done the past few days. I've always bought custom jigs from our local pro shop and will continue to buy my supplies from him, however I would like to design my own color combinations and what not to be a little different than what everyone else is using. Anyway, I plan on tying my skirts on with thread, however have seen a lot of posts about using 24 gauge copper wire. What is the advantage of the wire over wrapping? The twisting of the wire makes sense to me, but could someone post a picture of how/where to cut the excess off at? I know the wire size, but what thread would you suggest? I also use only St. Croix Elites (14 rods currently) and really like the split butt sections of the new Tournament Bass Rods, does anyone know if St. Croix does any custom work to keep warranty, and if not what do you guess a custom rod maker would charge to do this per rod? Thanks all, I can see the finding of this site is going to be expensive! Happy Holidays, Steve Quote

St.Croix doesn't have the time to do custom modifications to their rods. I personally wouldn't recommend any modification to any manufactured rack rods it will nullify the warranty, unless you don't care about your rods warranty. Even with a custom builder doing the job, there is a good chance that the blank can be nicked, and then cause a failure in that area on a hook set or heavy fight....Most custom builders will do the job for a hefty price: Create split rear grip from solid grip: $25 - $35 per rod..... If it were me I would use the Flea market here, sell off the old ones and then purchase the new 08's with the split grips and full warranties.... OR If your interested in split grips that are made for your hands, then I would have custom rods built... Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 23, 2007 Super User Posted December 23, 2007 Wrapping the jigs with thread would be a personal preference? Usually jigs do not last long enough for me to wrap them with thread? I just make them with the rubber collars and lately I have been using 24 guage wire to tie them down behind the rubber collars.
