I've been thinking about doing a NY trip in the middle of May for SM and LM primarily (throw in a pike or 2 if possible). I've seen a lot of posts for fall trips but not much on spring. Is Black Lake good at that time or maybe Lake George? Never been in NY in the spring and am looking for ideas. Thanks in advance.

Depends on what time of the spring you are talking about. I have a place on a lake south east of Syracuse that I open up late April/early May and the weather can still be mighty iffy. The water is real cold, but I have found that the fish are really hungry and will aggressively slam just about anything you throw at them. I have fished Black Lake a few years ago during the summer. It is really nice up here, but farther north than where I am located, so the weather factor could be significantly different.

May things are still generally slow but you can certainly fish. My clubs annual pike tournament is in May much farther north if that tells you anything.

What part of NY?

If you're going to be in the Hudson Valley, consider renting a rowboat and going onto Kensico Reservoir, or any other reservoir in the Hudson Valley. Fish are usually starting to get active around that time as it is Southern NY and warms up a bit sooner. Also, if you're willing to make the drive to CT, go to Squantz Pond/Candlewood Lake. Great SM and LM fishery with awesome topwater action.

Hope this helps. Lemme know if you have other questions about the area.

Pick the side of the lakes where it is still getting sun at sundown for your camp / park. The fish feed better in the warmed up water side. Plus

Well I think we are going to try Black Lake. Anyone have any tips for a mid May trip?

Yeah.........................don't bother, IIRC... Black lake is still one of the lakes in NY that is CLOSED for bass fishing until "season" opens the third Sat. in June. In may you'll find good fishing in the Finger Lake and C&R bass fishing is allowed.
