boostr Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Finally finished rigging my yak. I Installed a Yak-Gear anchor trolley, I have the Yak-Gear anchor kit, Yak-Gear 6ft Mud Stick, and built my own crate w/ rod holders using pvc. Came out pretty good if I say so myself 3 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 i like the anchor being thrown out like a grappling hook....nice set up for sure. those Feel Free Lures are getting some good press. 1 Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 What are your guys thoughts about Power Pole Micro anchors for yaks? They are expensive but seem like they are also a great tool, easy, and convenient. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 I like the idea but the cost is a bit much for me. Also, if you don't have a trailer i think it would be one more thing to have to hook up when you get to the lake. 1 Quote

They are expensive but seem like they are also a great tool, easy, and convenient. Expensive, yes. My main issue with them is that you cannot fold down the unit so it isn't vertical. Major problem when going through areas with low hanging trees, etc. Would be great if they could integrate either an automatic (more expense) folding mechanism, or a manual folding mechanism. 1 Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 One more question... Is their a Rigid Industries marine light I could mount on a Yak? I was looking to fish after dark and was thinking they would help... If not, another brand? Does anybody mount lights on their yak? Quote

Does anybody mount lights on their yak? i don't have them because of A) the cost the whole soldering process.... but some people have the supernova kayak lights.... the look cool, but i barely ever fish in the pitch black dark so it doesn't seem practical to me 1 Quote

Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 How does the stick go through the back of the yak? A scupper hole? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 Thats a nice bit of engineering. Still has the issue of the stick being straight up and, IMO, in the way of low hanging branches, etc. All depends on where you go. Excellent idea. For me, I'm not sure how much it would work as a lot of areas I have to shove the stick into mud or hard packed sand in order to get a grip. Either way, kudos to the inventor. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 I use a YakAttack VisiCarbon Pro light.Seems like a nifty little tool. Reasonably priced as well. How bright would you say it is in pitch black conditions? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 15, 2015 Super User Posted June 15, 2015 Brighter than most anything else I've seen for this purpose. There's a reason it's standard equipment in many models' angler package. 1 Quote

That's what I was thinking, but he says the weight of the Pole should be enough to drive it into the bottom. Quote
boostr Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 How does the stick go through the back of the yak? A scupper hole? I think he makes an adapter to fit whatever specific kayak Quote
Super User Darren. Posted June 16, 2015 Super User Posted June 16, 2015 That's what I was thinking, but he says the weight of the Pole should be enough to drive it into the bottom. The anchor pin I have is also heavy, and I wondered after I watched the video again, the same thing. But sometimes I've had to "feel around" the bottom with the pin to find a sufficient spot for it to "stick" in. Still a great idea he's got there. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 16, 2015 Super User Posted June 16, 2015 Well i got around to rigging up my brand new Helix 5 SI unit on the electronics pod on my ATAK. It is all contained in one nice easy to move unit. After doing some research aka messaging Wayne P. on here, I decided it would be best to make sure the transducer does not have any interference from the hull of my boat. It is still pretty protected but i will have to drop it in after launching and pull it out when beaching at the end of the day. I still need to silicone all the holes, used neoprene washers for now, but i wanted to make sure it all works before I finalize the installation. The battery and everything else is contained in the pod unit itself. The bracket is a galvanized corner support bracket used for cabinetry that i had to bend a little bit to make it level because the pod has a slight angle to it. Whoever came up with this pod idea should get a pat on the back because it is super slick and makes removal and installation a breeze. Anyways, looking forward to giving it a test tomorrow hopefully and then if all goes well, silicone all the holes and get it ready for my trip to the Outer Banks next week. 6 Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 With regards to those power poles for kayaks, what happens if your power pole gets stuck in the machine and it's in the down position? You would have to craw to the back of your kayak to mess with it. I don't think that would be very fun. Quote

I just wish it came with an actual manual and not a CD. I would like to take something on the water with me to learn as it is being used. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted June 16, 2015 Super User Posted June 16, 2015 You said, after testing, you would need to seal all the holes, what holes were drilled or cut? The pod itself is solid all around so holes needed to be drilled to mount the bracket and run the wire from the transducer into the pod. I also had two holes that i drilled in the bottom before I changed my mind on how to mount the transducer. I am actually not even sure how high the water level is on the pd so i may not even have to worry about it. I meant to check it last time out by taking the pod out while floating but i never did. Also if your boat is super stable, it might be even less of an issue. Quote
