This is for all of you kayak bass fishermen out there! Feel free to share pictures of your kayaks, modifications, and experiences. For the "DIYers" out there, it would be awesome if you guys could share cheap and easy modifications/rigs for a yak. I know myself, and many others would love to see this! Go crazy!

I have a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120. Haven't done very many modifications to it except an anchor trolly and a crate similar to what turtle has done. I will get a picture of my crate this evening.

Wow you must have some great balance.  I couldn't stand on one of those.

I own a Wilderness Ride 135, it's winter so I can't post pictures of it set up.  I'll have to go see if I have taken a picture of my "Ride" all set up.

had a buddy ask me one time if i wanted to go fish out of his kayaks for bass, at first i was like oh this is gonna be a fail lol after two days and 70 some odd fish i love it! I've always had a decent boat but its a whole different experience out of a kayak. Anyone know of a good one for a reasonable price?

I think these Perception Sport Pescador kayaks are good starters for bass fisherman. This is the 2008 Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 mold, a roto-molded sit on top kayak. The roto-molded kayaks are generally much more durable. Some of the big box stores sell very thin walled kayaks that do not do well around rocks. The Tarpon mold tracks well and is a stable platform for fishing.

You may want to surf around looking for the best deal, look for "West Marine Pompano" or "Perception Sport Pescador" kayaks. Both use the same mold, some include a seat and some do not so factor that into your final cost.

I've got the Ascend FS10 kayak. It's only $500, and comes equipped specifically for fishing. I would seriously recommend this kayak for anyone who is looking to get a reasonably priced kayak that can perform like the $700-1000 kayaks. Happy yak hunting!

Lmbfisherman- nerves of steal standing and fishing out of the tarpon! !!! Wtg!

I have the older style tarpon 140. Crate, trolleys, stake out pole, aftermarket seat. .... the usual.

I'm considering building a semi permanent "crate " out of PVC that I can leave loaded and travel with to save on load in/out time. If I do it, ill probably make a video.

Only DIY tip I can give that's not already well known is:

Stake out pole.

I have used this pole for about 3 yrs now in the worst conditions and it has held up like a champ. Easily anchors me in almost any oyster bar.

Get a schedule 40 8' piece of PVC, a tee, some caps, and glue. Get two 4' 1/2" wooden dowels, and some two part concrete epoxy putty.

Chop the end of the PVC off at an angle you're happy with. Fill the bottom and hole with the concrete epoxy/putty. Let harden. This will go through almost anything.

Next put the dowels inside the PVC. It may be a tight fit. Make it happen. This makes the pole almost indestructable- and it floats.

Cap it off with the tee and end caps.

Done.

All for about $12.

Paint or wrap it in paracord if you wish.

I fish out of an Ocean Kayak Trident 11T outfitted with a Lowrance Elite 4x-DSI fishfinder.  Nothing else real special about it other than it gets me out there where the fish are.  No pictures as it's kind of cold this time of year and its away in storage.

i have a wilderness ride 135.  has a lowrance fish finder, but no holes as i used the yakattack cellblok which works pretty well.  has a foot controlled rudder, high seat, have a pretty hooked up crate on it (with dividers for my tackle boxes and rod holders as well).  i also have a parknpole which is pretty crucial.  aside from that, i added the silent traction system in various spots around the kayak to cut down on the noise.  one of these days i'm going to figure out how to hook my 30or35lb minn kota up using the foot controls....  one of these days.....

I bought a wildy ride 135 late in the season last year and it's a whole different way of fishing.  I was previously shore bound.  Got a bunch of goodies this christmas and I can't wait for spring!

I haven't used it yet since I just got it a few weeks ago but here is my new to me rig. It's how I got it.

Perception sport - caster 12.5

X wing 3 switch console

Scotty rod holders

Ram mount

Cuda 300

Bilge pump

Lighted compass in console

Anchor trolley

Only things I've done was made a stakeout pole using some 3/4 solid fiberglass rod and added some plastic dividers to a milk crate. Will be adding a lid here soon. I also completely redid the wiring inside the console to my likings and epoxied a piece of 3/4 pvc to the transducer. Now it sits in the scupper hole nice and snug using a piece of pool noodle. Currently collecting old phone chargers to make rod leashes out of. A new seat will be installed before spring.

I fish out of a Perception Prodigy 110. It's a 10' sit in, not very stable, and doesn't have much room, but it is easily my most important fishing tool. I mostly fish with it but the kayak has been a part of a few duck and goose hunts thanks to the burlap cover I made for it.

I have a fishfinder that I use in it (I can post my ghetto PVC mount if someone wants to see), and I do lots of my fishing from a standing position during warm weather... after 2 years I have only fallen out once when I tried to set the hook in an awkward, backwards way while flipping/pitching.

Doesn't take much to get the job done

Here are some fish I have caught from the little dingy:

Lol, it's not that bad standing in the tarpon! Main thing is to find a flat spot to stand. I usually stand on the seat or in the foot wells.

I plan on making dividers for my crate and a stakeout pole soon.

I can't wait to get my kayak this spring when I get my bonus in march. Every penny of it is going into the kayak I'm not sure what I'm going to get yet I was thinking the wilderness systems 115 or 135. I think I saw some nucanoe kayaks that looked good. Every single day I think about what to get. What do you guys think I should get? My bonus should be around 3 grand what's the best one to get?

^ it all depends on how/ where you're going to use it.

I will say this. ... my dream rig right now is the native slayer 14.

I see that WS is coming out with a similar (?) Platform this year called the ATAK.

Research the types of yaks that are recommended for the style of fishing you're going to do..... then do everything in your power to try them out.

I'd buy a yak slightly below your budget so you have room to customize it to your fishing style.

paddle as many boats as you can and be honest about how you will use the boat.  once you figure that out buy the boat that gives you the most bang for the buck and serves your needs.

Also i would probably not plan on blowing your entire return on your first boat....even when paddling a boat and checking it out, you really don't know what you want until you are in the boat 10-12 times in my opinion.  the resale market on boats is pretty good so you can most likely sell the boat minimal loss later on if needed.

Ascend kayaks are a great value for their price. I own a 128T and FeelFree Lure 11.5, for which the 128T cost just over half of the FeelFree and delivers 80 - 90% of what my Lure does. I often take my 128T instead of my lure because it's more stable.

Besides, BPS gives Military & Public Safety 10% discounts, which covers some cost for your PFD, paddle, etc.

If you don't qualify, ask a friend who does to go with you and have them buy it cash.

If you're in Eastern MA, since you're "massrob", I'm willing to meet you in Spring & let you test my 128T & Lure 11.5, to give you an idea of what's out there. Also, Doug Gray at Billington Sea Kayak offers test paddles for his brands. He's in Plymouth, really nice guy to deal with.
