Robertqq Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Hi Folks, I have an 8 foot Daiwa UltraLight (UL) Spinmatic spinning rod that I really like. For the $ 35 it cost, it's an amazing rod; great cosmetics, etc. Can't understand how they can produce it and still make a profit. The only fault I have with it is that the tip is really way too soft/floppy for this length of a rod. So, I am looking to find another rod, and would appreciate any suggestions. I guess the next step up in stiffness would be a regular "Light" rather than an UL. Correct ? The other requirement I have is that it have the old fashioned, classic all cork (foregrip and handle), and not any of this new style cut-a-way cork. And, 8'. Cost should be about $ 50, max. Can't really come up with one. The closest I've found is the B n M Roger Gant Difference. Anyone have any experience with this rod ? Would you term it a "Light", or... ? BTW: they call this rod a "side pulling rod". Have never come across this term before. What construction differences make it a "side pulling rod" ? What is a side pulling rod ? Can it, or should it, be used as a "normal" rod ? I fish mainly for "small" Crappie and Largemouth Bass in Ponds; nothing ever "big". Any other suggestion besides the B nM ? Thanks, and best regards, Bob Quote
Super User geo g Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 Can't get much in that price range unless you find a super sale. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 The Berkley lighting rod is said to be an excellent rod for the price. Pretty sure you can get an UL version. You may also want to check out Lews' Laser Lite combo and their Wally Marshal rods. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 honestly you can cast light lures just as far with a 7' rod if you set it up right (light or ultra light). a 1000+ size reel w/ 5lb braid will cast a 1/16th jig just as far as ur 8 ft. I have a 6'6" Spinmatic from stream fishing back in the day and it's a noddle. i can't imagine what the 8ft is like. i know a lot of crappie guys love the 7' BnM Sam Heaton super sensitive. I had a 7' light action Shakespeare Micro in my hands at Wally world an it's a darn nice rod for $20. i almost picked it up for crappie but want to try Dicks and Cabelas first Quote
