Super User flyfisher Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 I posted up that i was making a career change. It was time to move away from the corporate world and do something i wanted to do instead of something that didn't give e anything more than a paycheck. It was then that i decided i was going to get my masters in education and teaching certification. Well, it has been a pretty crazy time since then but i never stopped moving and never took a break from classes and even doubled up on them once so i could keep on schedule, all while working full time and of course the normal family stuff. I did lose my job so for a few months i just took classes and took a break while looking for a job. I did end up finding a job, that kind of sucks, who am i kidding, it really sucks but i know it is temporary. Well i am now two weeks away from finishing my last class and found out yesterday that i now have student teaching placement!! I was getting worried as three districts near me already declined my application but the last one came through. So in about 3 weeks i will being my 12 weeks of student teaching, 5th graders, and if all goes well i will be licensed to teach here in Virginia and will hopefully have my own class next September. So for anyone who is thinking it is too late to make a change all i can say is go for it...is it gonna be easy, hell no. is it gonna take some sacrifice most likely but in the end it is worth it.... 11 Quote

Jolly Green Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Congratulations! Too early to start organizing biology field trips? "OK, class, I know the sun isn't up yet and you're all freezing but this is what is known as the pre-spawn period and let me tell you..." 1 Quote

Super User Sam Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 Outstanding! And as Ike says, "Never give up!" Keep us posted on your teaching career. And 5th graders are fun. 5th grade is right before their minds go to mush in the 6th and 7th grades. Hopefully you can contact the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries about their grade school fishing program. This is a program where the kids in your class get into the fishing industry. I think the VDG&IF sends out someone to talk to the class. I know of another grade school teacher who is a great bass fisherman, but may have been slightly sidelined when the twins arrived, who is doing this. In fact, I think he teaches the 5th grade. I will try to find Joel and ask him about the program. In the meantime, you can speak with the VDG&IF guys at the Richmond Expo next weekend and find out what they know about the program. If they are clueless you can call a great guy at the VDG&IF, Chris Dunnavant, who, last I heard, is in charge of the education programs. I will PM his number to you. And you may want to call Chris, anyway, and find out what he has in store for 2015. Look for me at the Expo on Friday. I will probably be wearing a G. Loomis brown sweat shirt. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 Congrats on getting after it. Hopefully you're prepared for all those crazy little 5th graders lol Quote

Smokinal Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Dude! I'm wicked happy for you! I don't even know you but I'm proud of you as well; proud for anyone who can do that in that stage of your life. My wife is going back to school too and I see first hand how hard it is to do well in school and still run a good houshold. So GOOD FOR YOU!!! And hopefully this won't be you.... Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 A huge congratulations. Personally given the choice of guarding 140 inmates or 25 5th graders, I'll take the inmates. Being an educator is a noble profession, we need more educators like you, ppl doing it for the right reasons. Quote
gripnrip Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Congrats! I went back to school in 09' so I could get upgraded at work. It was the toughest thing I ever went through. It seemed like the 10 months dragged and dragged but it was worth it. It provided a 35% increase in pay for my family. It allowed my wife to stay at home with our little girl. So when you say the reward is worth it. I second that! Congratulations once again! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 7, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 7, 2015 Thanks for the kind words everyone. I will have my certification in elementary education when it is all said and done. I have more experience with kids a little younger so this could be an interesting 12 weeks for sure. The best part, other than having summers off and being able to spend more time with my son, is seeing that the end is in sight. Quote
