BassnChris Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 who uses an in dash flasher as backup when the sonar loses depth? I do currently........but a boat I'm looking at doesn't have one. Trying to convince myself I don't need a flasher for backup........but I kind of like the warm fuzzy it gives me. Gonna be tough to find one......found a few but awful expensive. Do I need an in dash flasher or should I address the sonar losing depth.......anything I can do to ensure I that NEVER lose depth on my sonar? (Touch units) Thanks Chris Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 5, 2015 Super User Posted January 5, 2015 The best you can hope for is your equipment functions properly. BUT your depth issue is probably a mis-applied 2D transducer. That has to be installed correctly so it can perform at its best. It you get another flasher and don't install the transducer properly, you will have the same issue. Quote

The mis-applied 2d transducer I understand....that's probably it. Since I did install the transducer for my touch units.......which is what loses depth on occasion. My current flasher works 100% of the time. I was wondering if I should get one if I bought another boat.......but you probably hit the nail on the head with mis-installed transducer. Super User Wayne P. Posted January 5, 2015 Super User Posted January 5, 2015 If you are more confortable using a flasher for on-plane navigation, just get an LCR unit that has a flasher simulator. It is much faster processing depth than a wheel flasher. Additionally Vexilar still makes flasher units. Humminbird and Lowrance stopped making them due to the motors being discontinued. My Humminbird 798ci SI Combo has two simulated flasher views. This is the regular flasher: This is the Ice Fishing view: Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 6, 2015 Super User Posted January 6, 2015 If your 2d transducer is installed correctly you shouldn't have an issue. Turn up the ping speed and turn the sensitivity up some too and usually that will help. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted January 6, 2015 Super User Posted January 6, 2015 For many years a flasher is all I would run in the console because nothing else worked at high speeds. Now a lot of the LCD units work about as fast as a flasher. It was not until three years ago when I changed over to drown and side scan that I finally took my flasher out, but I still have at least a half dozen different ones in the garage. As for your LCD loosing depth, that could be the unit is just not fast enough (slow processing speed) or it could be the Xducer not properly mounted. If it's an aluminum boat, the turbulence created by the rivets or welded seam will create large numbers of small air bubbles, causing the Xducer to start loosing signal. Also if it's lined up on a bottom rib, the turbulence from it can cause signal loss. Mounted at the wrong angle can cause it. Quote
