Hey everyone,

Got a quick question.  I have a Revo Rocket and I am thinking about putting a shallow spool on it after send it to DVT for a proper cleaning and lube.  I am assuming this mod will free up the spool to dispense line faster, correct?  Has anyone done this modification?

Thanks,

Wdy

It will start up faster, which is beneficial with light weights (1-/4-1/8oz and under). It won't have much of a benefit with weights heavier than that, because capacity will become an issue.

You'll need to upgrade the spool supporting bearings too.

yeah, I thought I was.  I just can not get that real to caste well.  It is going to DVT in May or so.  I have a surgery coming up in Feb. or March and the recovery time is long so..........

just kind of disappointed in the reel.

Its got dual brakes right?  What are your settings? I have an Elite IB with the dual brakes(1st gen) and its casts very well. I use 1-2 centrifugal brakes and use the mag dial as needed.

All of my brakes are off and the tension knob is about to fall off the reel.  I should be able to throw a lure into the next state, but it actually is the least capable casting reel I have.

I took it apart and cleaned it yesterday, but it is going to Mike at DVT in May.  ( I have a surgery coming up next month and probably will not be able to fish till May).

I found the spool on another website, but it seems 3rd gen Revo spools are out.

Imo buying a spool is a waste of money right now. If you have 0 brakes on and still can't get any distance. Then there is another issue here.

x2, major issue.

The LT, LTX and LTZ all have a short shaft spool. All the REVO 3's are a long shaft. I'm almost 99% sure they don't make a shallow spool for any REVO 3.

a shallow spool will give you a quick start up and make pitching easier but long casting needs the momentum created by a deeper spool. That said, it's got to be an issue with the reel. I have a couple of the gen2 premiers that have the same dual break system and when they get a little dirty casting distance is cut in half. I found that I needed to clean the edge of the spool and the area that the centrifugal breaks contact the inner spool as well as the bearings. The type of lube you use is important as well (stay away from Ardent products). See what it's like after tuning and take it from there

LT, LTX, and LTZ are Revo Gen 3s, and they all use short spool shafts. ZPI and Avail makes shallow spools for the certain Gen 3s, not sure if they would fit the Rocket.

Ok, many points here.  Yeah, the distance is terrible when I use it as a frogging reel.  I am almost sure there is something fouled up in the reel.  Sad part is, the reel has not been used 5 times.  I bought it a year ago and do to various reasons, she got moth balled.

Jezi, I am not to familiar with Revos, but there mention of Gen 3 on some of the rows on that website.  I might not understand the models sighted though.

Distance would be nice, but my goal is to free the reel up for pitching/flippiing.  But, my 50E just kills it for predictably of pitching, which in turn, gives me a lot more confidence to use the Shimano.  But that reel is no where near stock and only 7 to 1 gear ratio.  (I think the speed of the Rocket is really worth it in fishing, that is the selling point of this reel, until the new Diawa Zillion drops.)

I might go ahead and send it off to DVT sooner vs. later, just to figure out what is going on.  I'll probably put some Bocas in, which i really dont want to do considering it is a $300 reel and should be more then adequate at that price.

No, no they're aren't. The LT and LTX where out before the Revo 3's were released. The LTZ is on the same platform as the LT and LTX. The Rocket is on the same platform as the STX, Winch etc, all long shafts.

Back to the topic, WdyCrankbait before I sold all my Revo 3's off most of them developed a problem with the centrifugal brakes. I would only have 1 or 2 set on, but during mid cast they would all engage destroying the distance of my cast.

Mmmm, that is not news I was hoping to hear.

Its a simple fix, I just took the brakes a part, and only left 2 of the 6 pins inside the housing. But its still BS, Abu Garcia has gone downhill with all the Gen 3 Revo stuff.

Actually the MGX was the first Gen 3, then all the rest came out, S, SX, STX, Premier, etc.. the LTX came out in Japan around the same time as the MGX. They all use the same frame and side plates. Apparently some of the gen 3s like the S and Winch use a long spool shaft while others like the STX, Rocket, SX, Premier etc. use the short spool shaft.

I'm probably wrong on the shaft part, but I doubt you could put an LT, LTX or LTZ spool into a rocket (or any other short shaft Revo 3). Just look at the compatibility list for any of the micro spools for the LT, LTX or LTZ @ hedgehogg studio or JP Tackle.
