"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." -Nick Saban

Now this is just plain funny.

I think anyone or any team that makes it to the final four is definitely a winner.

When it comes down to mano a mano one will be victorious, the other will not.

Much of the glory is founded in the journey. Saban has reached the pinnacle

many times and come away with the trophy on several of those occassions.

Yes, but to say something like that is arrogant and a slap in the face to Ohio State.

Every team is a winner using his definition.

Hey, the Vols won their bowl so they not only are champions but they got a trophy!!!!

Wait until next year...............

I found that funny based on it coming from Nick Saban.  If John Wooden had said it, then there could be some legitimacy to it, for Wooden always said that winning was a byproduct of excellence.  His focus was on doing the best you possibly could.

I don't believe Saban ever said such a thing after Alabama or LSU won...

Its a cop out for Saban though, his entire career and mantra is built on winning, he lived the second is the first loser mind set.

Bottom line is that Alabama played like crap, on both sides of the ball and lost the game. They were not prepared for Ohio State and got beat.

Being an SEC fan I was extremely disappointed in the outcome of the game.

Following Bama all season I saw what they were capable of doing and for some reason they did not perform as expected.

Coaches fault?  Players fault?  OSU was more excited about the game than Bama?

Looking at the teams Alabama played and Ohio State's competition anyone can see that, other than for the awful patsies Bama puts on their schedule, Bama's SEC schedule was more difficult than the Buckeyes.  So one would expect the Tide to do well against OSU.

But it did not happen; OSU wanted the game more and to prove that they belonged in the playoffs; and the SEC is shut out for a second straight year from taking the national championship title home.

As I said before, wait until next year........

Hey Sam - a few questions for you.

Is it at all the slightest bit possible that Bama simply wasn't as good as people thought?

Is it possible your whole strength of schedule argument was artificially created by A&M's early season victory over South Carolina?

Just checking...

^^ thank you for stating that. Ohio state played 9 bowl eligible teams. We beat Wisconsin bad and they beat auburn bad. Who had a close game with auburn ? Bama, the SEC is overrated and will be until people realize the facts about the SEC. There just not all that. They had a poor bowl schedule.

I love these conference fan boy discussions. This game or that game doesn't prove or disprove a conference's superiority. The fact that every game is a possible upset is what makes it worth watching.

Oregon lost to Arizona who came within 8 yards and a lucky call of losing to UTSA. LSU beat WI but lost by 34 to AU who lost in OT to WI. VT beat OSU and lost to everybody else. Bama beat WVU who beat Baylor. Any of the above might beat OSU or Oregon if they played today.

In the college game you have 3-4 players on the field who have what it takes to succeed in the NFL and 18 guys that will be selling life insurance in 5 years. With players like that desire and momentum play a huge role and can make any outcome possible.

Then what are the bowls for ? If a game dosent prove superiority then I guess we should put witicha state vs Syracuse in our championship. No the point of the game is to prove who is better, that's why Bama is out because they could not prove themselves as a superior team. And Ohio state has more than 3 going pro in there receiving group. Heuraman, Devin smith, Michael Thomas, Evan spencer, jalin marshall, don't re Wilson. That's six in one group not saying every team has that but the top 4 all have tons of talent in their lineup. It's not about there future they are just as sick of people saying the SEC is the best confrence as everyone else. So what do they do go out and beat these oh so great SEC teams.

The bowls, or any championship is not about who is better, but who can win the championship.

I like what the NHL does in giving out 2 team awards.  The Presidents Cup is won by the team that has the best regular season record & the Stanley Cup is won by the team that wins the playoff tournament.  Neither is a confirmation of who the best team is, but rather what team achieved what.  It would be ludicrous to say that the L.A. Kings, last years Stanley Cup winner, was the best team in the NHL.  The were 6th in their Conference and did a high wire act through the first 3 rounds of the playoffs to make it through.  That doesn't take away from their accomplishment & in no way tarnishes their Stanley Cup win, in fact it makes the win even more incredible.  Sort of like the 1980 US Hockey team that won Olympic gold, they won the tournament with a team that most would consider not the best.

I'm just saying people put way too much stock in that one game. It's the best system we have but who's to say Baylor or TCU might not beat OSU or Oregon. Is VT a better team than OSU? By your logic they should be playing Oregon next week because they were clearly superior when they played.

And yes, OSU has some great talent. They have a lot of players that will be drafted or walk on a pro team. How many of those will end up on a practice squad? How many get cut first year? How many Heisman candidates wash out? Tebow, Jason White, RG3 come to mind. They killed it in college, in the pros meh. Great college players aren't necessarily great pro players and vice versa.

Bottom line is the system will never tell you who is the best team, just who's the best that day.

Please ask the Kings if they'd like to trade their Stanley Cup for a President's cup and let me know what they say :)

And the Hogs should be loaded next year so don't be surprised if they are tagged to win the SEC West.

The Stanley Cup is obviously more prestigious based on the history of it, but that wasn't the topic.  If we are talking about what team is the best, the Presidents Cup is most likely a better measurement.

Plus, the current King's roster will never win a Presidents cup, they can't sustain a high level of play for a consistent period of time.  When they won the Stanley Cup 3 years ago, they came in as an 8 seed & there is a good chance this years team won't even make the playoffs. They are a gritty, hardnosed team that when playing well, can grind out 4 wins for every 3 losses.  The rest of the time, they get run (skated?) off the ice.  it is fortunate for them that 16 of the 30 NHL teams make the playoffs, otherwise they would never even had the opportunity to win either of those cups.

RSM you make a good case that it takes a better team to have the best regular season. The way most sports are structured though it is the team smart and lucky enough to have the best when the regular season ends. Winning more games than necessary with little left for the postseason is counterproductive.

Dosent that all depend on strength of schedule like what other sport ???

Strength of schedule is always going to be a hot topic. There will always be inequities both real and imagined. Only one team takes home the championship trophy though. It does make for interesting debate.

I agree that being a winner does not require a championship trophy in both sports and life. It is an interesting comment coming from Saban though...
