Bass2124 Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Was wondering if anyone has tried this line in either 10 or 15 lb test on a spinning reel for drop shotting? I have been using fireline crystal with 5-6 ft of 6 lb sniper fc as a leader and have had good results but hate the feel of the line during the retrieve (not very smooth), better than regular braid but was wondering if the power pro super 8 slick stays as smooth as it feels for very long? adam lancia Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 It sure does stay smooth. I used 15# all last season on all of my spinning reels with a fluoro or mono leader. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted January 2, 2015 Super User Posted January 2, 2015 I up'd my line to 15lb Seaguar Smackdown and loved it. Needed some other line and Smackdown wasn't around so I bought the 15lb Super Slick. Worked very well on my Drop Shot with an 8lb fc leader. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted January 2, 2015 Super User Posted January 2, 2015 super slick is a good line. may fade the color out a little faster than others, but i don't think the fish care. Quote
RB 77 Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I haven't used the smaller diameter on a spining reel, but have used the larger (50 & 65 lb) on a baitcaster and love it. It has stayed very smooth and would buy it again. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted January 2, 2015 Super User Posted January 2, 2015 I liked 20 when i used it, but i wore really fast. I had the line fray badly in less than a season of heavy fishing. It was on my primary rod so i got a lot of use. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I've used 20# on my spinning rods and loved it. I have a buddy who uses 15 on his spin gear and he also loves it. Nether of us have ever experienced any issues, we both use a fluoro leader as you plan to do. I for some strange reason I prefer the brown over their green color, even when using a leader, there's just something about the timber brown color that seems to get bit more often for me. I'm in no way saying this is an actual fact, it just seems to work out that way for me. More than likely it's just because I have more confidence in the brown color. Quote

Just about anything is going to be better than Fireline Crystal. Regular Fireline and perhaps even dental floss is better than Crystal. I prefer Suffix 832 over Power Pro Super 8 Slick for reasons I don't think matter much on spinning tackle, so PPS8 should be an excellent line for your application and worlds better than Fireline Crystal. Might want to take a look at Nanofill too. Quote

Allthough I haven't had any break offs per se, I have never felt confident keeping it on the reel. I have heard good things about 832 and may give that a test drive as well. I thought and read about Nanofil and aside from the price, there are plenty of reviews that say it is a very weak line, not to mention I have never been a fan of Berkley after I tried Vanish. I have had more break offs from that 1 line alone than all others combined. Quote

I've used the 10lb for the mainline on my dropshot. I don't think they make it any lighter weights. The PPSS8 on my dropshot rod has been there for three seasons now. The initial supple feel does deteriorate pretty quickly with heavy use. KVD line condition does seem to help a great deal. Eventually, the weave starts to loosen and the line appears yarn like. I always simply cut off the bad and tied a new leader back on. Mind you I typically fish clear, open waters of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario so YMMV. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted January 3, 2015 Super User Posted January 3, 2015 Both normal PP and the super slick are great lines! 1 Quote

The only way to pick your camp is to buy the stuff and make up your mind about it. I'm of the believer variety. PPS8 or 832 as well as quite few other 8 carrier braids should work well for you, although I would go with a #20 or #30. Fireline is actually rated at 50% of what it should be making #14 Fireline a #28ish braided product. I'm guessing this is where the #10 and #15 rating you're looking are coming from (Fireline) Quote
