New to bass fishing and need advise. 1) Received a 7:1:1 casting reel as a gift and seek advise as to what type of bass lures I might use with this reel? and 2) What casting rod might I consider purchasing (length, power, action) for this reel? THX!

This is a good ratio for lots if things. I like to use them for Burning Lipless Crankbaits and Spinnerbaits, Texas Rig plastics and jigs, and frogs as well. I would go with a high quality 6'6" or 7' Medium Heavy Casting Rod that you think feels good w/your reel. What is the specific reel you got?

You can really use it for anything. Typically people will use a high speed reel for bottom contact lures (Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, jigs) or topwaters/frogs. Jerkbaits might be another option depending on personal preference and style. Once you decide what you want to use it for you should easily be able to find info on rod specifications with the search function here or good Ole Google.

Welcome to the forum.  The typical suggestion for an all-around rod is a 6'6" to 7' MF or MHF although I also like 7'2" and 7'3" rods.  Rod power boils down to the type of cover you will be fishing and the weight of the lures you plan on using.

I assume you don't want to spend a lot of money.  $110 isn't much for a rod.  Check out those at TW to get an idea of what is available and prices.  Cabela's had a sale on some of their house brand rods as did several other places.  You may want to wait a few months for another sale depending on where you live.  Doubt you will fish for awhile if from some place like Minnesota, but if from Florida you could go fishing tomorrow.

I also suggest waiting a bit before buying to give yourself a chance to do some research.

Brands:  *** *** Black rods are a lot of rod for the money.  The handle is a bit thin for some people which is why I suggest you handle as many different rods as you can to find a preference.  Having said that, I have bought the majority of my rods sight unseen.  I depend on the reviews and opinions of others.  Fenwick is another company offering a lot of value for your money.  I'd look at the HMG line first unless willing to spend a bit more.  No idea how their new Bass series is, but the Aetos is a excellent rod.

For a little less you could check out the Fenwick HMX and Berkley E-Motion rods.  You missed the sale on Shimano Clarus rods.  A rod you won't read much about on here is the Hurricane Redbone.  I bought one last summer at the suggestion of a fellow member and like it a lot so far.  The Calico Jack is suppose to be a good rod at a very reasonable price, but is another rod seldom mentioned.

If you want to keep the cost around $40, then look at the Berkley Lightning and Lightning Shock.  Stick with the Lightning Shock if planning on strictly using braid.  Get the Lightning if going with any other type of line.

There are a ton of choices and everyone has their favorites.  Not many of us can afford to try them all so our opinion is normally going to be biased towards what we have used and/or what we have read about.  I could suggest the Kistler KLX from all I've read about the rod, but a friend who has fished with one doesn't agree with the high praise many give it.  Some think it is the absolute best in its price range while my friend thought it was only okay.  Personal preference.  I love my Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rods, but some may absolutely hate the short handle they have.

I have a daiwa zillion with that ratio and I use it on a G Loomis IMX 844c.  I fish just about everything on this set up.  I especially like jerkbaits and lipless cranks.  I occasionally will use it for topwater frogs and buzzbait.  I also use it for some heavy weighted soft plastic and jigs.  Again it is a very versatile.

Bring the reel with you.

You'll be able to mount it on a few rods and see what feels good to you.

Good Luck finding your new bass stick

Welcome aboard! Agree with much above.

You can throw almost everything on the reel,

just practice with it since you are new to the

sport.

Back yard casting, thumb control, etc. Lots of

good videos on YouTube.

Also practice casting at targets to focus your

efforts on accuracy. The more you practice,

the better you'll get.
