Jon G Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I really want to get a new camera specifically for fishing and outdoor use. I was hoping for something waterproof and doesnt get damaged very easily. I was looking at the GoPro but i don't care for making videos, just taking pictures. Right now I really like the Olympus Tough TG3 but was wondering if there were any better options. Quote
blongfishing Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I make a lot of pics with my gopro it has a picture taking feature and I love it! Quote
Jon G Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 What's your price range $500 for the camera (not including accesories such as memory card, case, etc) Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 31, 2014 Super User Posted December 31, 2014 I've owned a few brands of 35mm reflex digicams over the years, including a Nikon with Nikkor lenses. Surprisingly, the Nikkor lens was flawed and the Nikon body was problematic. I migrated back to a Canon 60D, which I use today and highly recommend. Though it's water-resistant, it's not waterproof, but I store the camera in my Dry Box (which is always on my deck). Roger Quote
Rhino68W Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 If you have a smart phone look into getting a good waterproof case. Much cheaper and user friendly. Plus it will cut down on stuff to bring. Quote

Super User RoLo Posted December 31, 2014 Super User Posted December 31, 2014 I should've mentioned that our major interest is wildlife and telephoto zooming, not fish pictures. I also keep a Galaxy Android S5 in my Dry Box, but never use it for picture-taking Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted December 31, 2014 Super User Posted December 31, 2014 I picked up a Fujifilm Finepix XP70 series. It's water, dust & shock resistance. You can sync it to a smart phone for picture transfer to your phone for sharing. I think it was $199. Jeff Howell [00 mod] has one and recommended it. Great little camera that makes a good boat camera without breaking the bank. It's worth taking a look. Works under water to 32 feet. 1 Quote

Super User Scott F Posted December 31, 2014 Super User Posted December 31, 2014 That Olympus looks like a nice camera. If you like photography, you need to be able to take a variety of different pictures. The only problem with waterproof cameras is the lack of a good zoom lens. That limits the kind of outdoor photography you can do. The extreme wide angle lens is what makes the GoPro a bad choice for everything except close up photos and close up videos. With a $500 budget, I'd get 2 cameras. One water proof, and one like the Nikon L830 that has a 30X optical zoom. That way you are covered if you want to get a shot of that eagle up in the tree or the big fish your partner got in the front of the boat in the rain. I have a Canon with a 24X zoom I got a few years ago and use it for everything except when It's raining or I'm wading when I carry my waterproof Olympus. 1 Quote
Weld's Largemouth Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 The Olympus Tough TG-3 is the best all around waterproof camera for photos. Sharp, beautiful photos. Amazing lens. It is also very good at focusing very quickly so you can get that photo in action when you need it Quote

Super User tomustang Posted December 31, 2014 Super User Posted December 31, 2014 I wouldn't trust olympus cameras based on their own employees bad experiences with quality and repair turn around time. Quote

Jon G Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 Well I went to Best Buy today and found the Canon Powershot Sx520 HS marked down from $400 to $200 it is not waterproof which was fine because I only wanted that to take underwater shots of fish, but it is not a deal breaker. I played around with it and and looked up some reviews on my phone and seemed to be pretty good so I bought it. From some of the other features of it, it had seemed it would also be good for other uses. Thanks for all the recommendations every one!! This is the camera I got if anyone is interested: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/canon-powershot-sx520-hs-16-0-megapixel-digital-camera-black/7719029.p?id=1219286766552&skuId=7719029 Quote
