UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — It didn't become official until Saturday's weigh-in at the Bassmaster Elite Series Cayuga Lake tournament was complete.

 

But it's a done deal now: Kevin VanDam, the most accomplished angler in B.A.S.S. history, didn't qualify to compete in what would have been his 25th Bassmaster Classic in a row.

 

That's almost unimaginable because VanDam has been so consistently good for so long.

 

KVD handled the bad news just like he's handled everything else in his brilliant career -- with class and honesty.

 

"I can promise you, I hate it right now," he said at the Frontenac Park weigh-in site.

 

"But I don't care who you are or how good you are, it's going to happen eventually. It's very humbling out here."

Since he won't be fishing it, I sure hope he will be one of the TV hosts for the Classic! Who could be better calling the shots fish by fish?

No I just thought I would open the door to discussing it not realizing it had already been discussed. I actually did a search for it before I posted it and did not find any previous discussion of it. My apologies for the overlapping posts. If moderators would like to delete it I am OK with it.

KVD you have to choose just one rod and one reel and one lure and will be allowed to compete.

Whats it going to be?

 

I think he would jump at the opportunity.

Yeah KVD was in the first classic I watched.  So I grew up watching him and I honestly thought that he would never miss the classic.  It is juts crazy goes to show that you never can get to good for the sport.  You always have to be on your edge

I think the other guys are all happy.  I mean Edwin Evers is probably estatic knowing he doesn't have to fish against KVD.

I hope he doesn't get in some how. If he did not qualify like everyone else then he has no business fishing it. And I am thinking it would be really cool if he sat it out and went on camera calling the shots for it. I would rather listen to KVD talk about it for just once.

 

I'm gonna be honest with you, and say that I am not a fan of the new way of producing bass fishing shows. They are less about fishing and more about sponsors buying up all the air time with commercials and I can't stand that. I want to watch the guys fish and see what they are doing with my own eyes rather than listen to people telling me what they are doing with the camera off the fisherman and on the show hosts. But if KVD were a show host that would be different, and bring in Denny Brauer to put beside him too! Then we would have no need to even see the fishermen fishing! KVD and DB would be more than enough to keep many of us glued to the TV.

To me fishing is not always about science and skill, though having all that definitely helps out. Obviously KVD is one of the most skilled in the business and he did not qualify. Is it his fault? Is it that his skills and knowledge were lacking somehow? I don't think so.

 

A lot of times fishing is just luck of the draw. Sometimes you catch them and sometimes you don't.

 

I have seen some of most skilled fishermen with a bazillion dollars worth of equipment get whupped up on by people sitting on shore in a chair with cane poles.

 

So to me for KVD not making the qualifications has nothing to do with him as much as it has to do with him just not getting bites like others did.

Oh I agree on the fishing shows, they were quite good up to the time when Ray Scott sold to ESPN.. I just won't watch them much, if at all.

DB had a cool little show after he won the classic, I really enjoyed being "Schooled"

I think the other Elite series pros are catching up with Kevin.

 

He is still an outstanding guy and wonderful bass fisherman and I expect him to return to his old form next year.

Now wait a minute...KVD has won more than 1 Championship and was never

consider the worst competitor in the field! Can you even imagine KVD fishing

for 20 years and only have a winning record in two of those years?

I hear ya! But the amount of air time those sponsors are demanding are taking away from my quality of enjoyment of watching bass fishing. I want to see fishing, not listen to people describe it for me while brand names are flashing around like neon lights in Las Vegas. Those sponsors are ruining pro fishing in my opinion. Just ruining it. Bass fishing was suppose to be a fun sport to enjoy and not have to think about what all they want to shove down our throats just to gain access to the sport we love.

 

Why have we allowed those sponsors to literally take over our favorite sport? Why? Do we need another one? How about ten new companies to buy up even more air time? If this keeps up, we won't see any bass fishing. It will be one long commercial called the Classic. Want to see them fish? Buy a ticket.

 

Wouldn't it be great if we had bass tournaments where brand names were hidden and against the rules? I miss the old days! Put duct tape across every brand name and let's get back to fishing!

 

I know, I know, not going to happen. And that is why a lot of smaller bass clubs are taking off these days- because many of us just want to fish without all the sponsor noise pollution and eye pollution they throw at us.

 

Get lost sponsors! You are ruining fishing!  (this is just my opinion a wishful dream)

It is kind of a double edged sword, the same people that doing all the advertising that we don't enjoy are the same ones that make professional fishing possible.
