endless Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 I was looking into getting the Springfield range officer compact but because no ambi safety I'm thinking about a kimber. Either ultra CDP ii or compact CDP ii. Just not sure on them especially price wise. They're pretty and feel good for sure but are they deceiving?? If you had $1500 to spend on ambi carry 1911 in either 3" preferably 4" that is possible for concealing what would be your choice if like me a lefty? Quote
Crappiebasser Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 If you like the Springfield you can put a Colt, Kimber, or Wilson ambi safety on it. Quote
desmobob Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 I have two Colt 1911s... a Combat Commander and a Combat Elite I bought new in the nineties. I'm a big guy with big hands and hated them both until I put extended safeties on them. The "modern" 1911s are so much nicer! Most of the upgrades you used to have to do or pay to have done now come standard. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Kimber or a Springfield. Carry guns seem to be a lot like bass casting reels. Everyone has their own favorite for their own reason. I think the best way to go is ask around, go to the ranges, and try to handle and shoot all the pistols you're interested in. It's a big investment and it's nice to get the one you'll be most happy with. Tight lines (and tight groups), Bob Quote
endless Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 If you like the Springfield you can put a Colt, Kimber, or Wilson ambi safety on it.Wouldn't that require a gun smith and pretty penny to install an ambi safety?Des- something I would like to do a gun range and try either hut I haven't bother with checking with them or their prices. I think their one near my job might give a call! Quote
Crappiebasser Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 It's not hard to install if you're mechanically inclined. I put one on my old Colt in maybe 30 minutes. Most are drop in but I have heard of people having to file the shaft to get a good fit. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 29, 2014 Super User Posted December 29, 2014 I have 2 1911's...........neither are "fancy modern" ones. Both were made in the 40's during WW2, one is a 1942 Colt mfg. the other a 1943 Remington Rand mfg., both are still stock/original USGI. They are a PITA to carry, big, heavy, and all kinds of things to get snagged on clothing. I have a "modern" 1911 on my wish-list, I want the Sig 1911 Scorpion 4" carry model.... but it's pricey, and still has too much crap sticking off of it to get caught on stuff, so I might have to "settle" for a non-1911 carry .45acp, I like really liked the Springfield XD-S 4.0 in .45acp. Super User Angry John Posted December 29, 2014 Super User Posted December 29, 2014 I have a limber eclipse pro 2 with a 4 inch barrel. I love it and stainless is easy to care for. It is very accurate and when looking it had great reviews. Quote
John G Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 1911 for concealed carry = Uncomfortable! Been there done that and won't make that mistake again! Quote
endless Posted December 31, 2014 Author Posted December 31, 2014 John G- what size 1911 was you trying to conceal?? Crappiebasser- yea I think I'm sticking with the Springfield. I can get a gunsmith to install one for me. Quote
John G Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 John G- what size 1911 was you trying to conceal?? A Colt Compact Model 1991A1. I have been carrying since 98 and this was my first carry gun. I didn't know a whole lot about pistols but I knew that my dad likes the Government Model 1911 so I bought this. I carried it for a while in an Uncle Mikes nylon holster. Those holsters are junk as they do nothing to support the weight of the weapon. I am sure that holster contributed to my discomfort. My wife got me a Glock 30 for Christmas in 98 and I started carying that. The weight difference was night and day between the Glock and the Colt. I eventually settled on a Glock 19 in a Safariland 5197 as my EDC. Light, thin and to me the most important part about carrying, it's comfortable. Quote
Djf3864 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 As John G said a good holster will make a huge difference, but so will a good solid leather gun belt (or nylon if that is your thing). These belts are much thicker and generally a little wider than most you would buy in a store, they will keep the holster in place and prevent it from ripping the belt apart removing and putting the holster on. I like the Crossbreed Holsters, but there are a bunch of good holsters designs out there to choose from. Unfortunately you end up with a draw full of holsters because you normally cant try before you buy, but it is worth the investment if it puts the gun on your hip everyday. Quote
endless Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Yea I have been looking at some blackhawks. Just curious on thermoplastic?? Does it rub the finish of the gun? Quote
John G Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Yea I have been looking at some blackhawks. Just curious on thermoplastic?? Does it rub the finish of the gun? I have not seen a holster that does not rub the finish on a gun. Quote
Josh Smith Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Hello, I build or heavily modify most of my guns. My carry 1911 is no exception. There are more pics but some are watermarked, and I'm not trying to advertise. A Google search on my name and 1911 will bring up a lot. The only things stock about this pistol are the frame, slide and barrel. It almost got a new barrel but dang, this one shoots well! Aftermarket ambi safeties are bountiful. Choose one you like. Fit it, and enjoy it! "Proper" safeties need fitted. Kimber's safeties are MIM and have a relief molded in to clear the sear on Kimber pistols. This may or may not work on other brands. (I tried one on the above carry pistol and it fit very tightly, but wore down with contact. I was not, however, impressed by the strength of the safety. It broke at the joint.) Look at Wilson Bulletproof and Ed Brown internal locking safeties. They are expensive but worth it. Stay away from Mueschke and the like; they are junk. I do like my Caspian ambi safety (with reservations; it's strong!) but they don't make it any longer. My carry holster is a K.L. Null Super Speed Scabbard. I'm 6'2" and I don't hardly notice this OWB holster and pistol. The weight its offset by a couple mags on the other side. Josh Quote
gunsndrums1 Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Everyone if you are thinking about buying a 1911 spend the extra and go with a Springfield operator. Great gun, a trp is a good 1911 as well Quote
L a r r y Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 I jumped into the 1911 arena recently with the purchase of a SA Loaded. Straight out of the box, this thing shoots amazing. I was not ready to spend $1k on a firearm and I was able to find this NIB at a local dealer for a good price. Check out gun broker to find the best deal. I took it to the range a week after picking it up, and between my Browning HP, I didn't know which one I had more fun with shooting. Pretty tight groupings on the first mag, and the second mag with double taps still tight.........DON'T SLEEP ON THE SA LOADED First mag Second mag - Double tap I've since added a Wilson Combat magwell and a couple of Chip McCormick 10 rd mags and CM base pads to the stock mags. These were out at 15yds Quote
IndyGlockMan Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 I have a Sig 1911 Nightmare 5" Nice gun, super accurate. Quote
