Collegiate Bass Fishing

I'm currently active duty and I am seperating from the military here in the next year. my plans are to attend either VT or UVA which both have bass fishing teams. Does anyone know the process for joining a collegiate bass team? I have messaged a few anglers currently on teams with no reply and was hoping someone could give me more info here.

Contact them. When you get there go to meetings, pay your dues, and fish the tourneys.

If you get into contact with them there probably is just a fee for being in the club and depending if you are a full time student you could fish FLW or BASS. Those are some developed clubs so theres probably more to it but for my schools club we have a few part time members that just fish club tournaments and we have a $30 entry fee and have certain things you have to do as part of the club. Hopefully you can get into contact with someone.

So to understand this right. being on the collegiate bass fishing team allows you to fish under your schools name in FLW or BASS Tourneys with no registration fee.

 

and as far as boats go i dont see many collegiate students fishing with there own boats and dont see the schools supplying the boats or is it a Boater, Non-boater type thing. or is it a Daddy's moneys fishing club?

Sometimes the club will have boaters donate their time. The club pays for gas, launch fees, the likes. Sometimes guys in the club will have a boat, and as a lot of college tourneys involve partners, they'll have another guy to fish from the back. If you have a boat, use it. It's a huge advantage in that type of thing. Also, it depends on your club afiliation. They may be with FLW or BASS but not both. Usually they have a qualifier and the team who does the best gets to fish the big tourneys, or they have upperclassmen fish the big stuff.

As far as boats go when I fished for ISU in the FLW event that I fished it was my partner and myself on a volunteer's boat. He donated his boat, fuel and time to us that day so we could compete. Now that's just one of the college series. I know there are some that require your own boat.

Also to join the club all you had to do was pay your annual fee and attend meetings. I was a member in a very early stage of the club and got to pick an FLW tournament to fish. Now they have a broader base and I believe they have a points system they use to figure out who gets to fish the big tournaments.

Keep in mind you will have to hold an active membership with either BASS or FLW in order to compete.

The flw circuit started requiring you to bring your own boat. Years prior they payed the pros to take the college anglers who needed a boat out. The coolest thing they have changed this year is that each qualifying event was limited to 50 (now unlimited) teams but now colleges can send as many teams as they want so no more fighting for which tournament to fish or for spots.

Ive fished against the guys form VT and they have a huge club and are of the top clubs in FLW for a reason. They have smaller club points tournaments to determine who gets to fish the big ones. I only have experience wiht the FLW after fishing with SUNY Plattsburgh on there club team and the FLW are now requiring everyone who fishes provides their own boat due to loss of FLW sponsors.
