Chesapeake, Va Fishing Spots

recently stationed back in Chesapeake, VA. no boat or kayak but have been fishing some ponds i have found with good results. just wondering where people are fishing well and whats public.

 

also anyone fished the ponds at naval base little creek? if so how did you do?

 

i have gas money if anyone wants to take me fishing

Welcome back to the Commonwealth and thank you for your service.  Keep that naval base safe for all of us.

 

As for fishing in the greater Tidewater area please go to BPS in Hampton, or a local tackle shop, and pick up the new 2015 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet from Game and Inland Fisheries.  It has a listing of the places to fish all over the Commonwealth.

 

Also plan to drive to Meadow Park by Kings Dominion the weekend of January 16th and attend the Richmond Fishing Expo.  You take I-64 to I-295 and then head north on I-95 to exit 98, Kings Dominion exit, and go about a mile past PKD's entrance. Meadow Park will be on your left.

Personally, I have only fished Lake Trashmore and did not do well. It was very windy and the goose wire will not allow you to get close to the water from the bank.  And no, I have never fished Little Creek Naval Base.

sam thanks for the info man. im familier with the RVA area as i grew up in chester / colonial heights. i fish some ponds and such up there when i come visit friends and stuff. next time im at BPS ill look for the magazine. also i will be at the expo for a day or two. wife already gave the go ahead

Check Suffolk, find the lonestar lakes there.  You should be able to fish from the shore there.  

 

I used to live up in Newport News and familiar with that Suffolk area.  Great lakes there, Cahoon, Prince, another was reopened about 5 years ago, when I left Newport News.

Look up Bass Jons, a website for the Southeast part of the state.  Maybe you can make friends through there and get out on one of those lakes.

I agree with Lone Star Lakes.  But don't expect to go out and do great immediately, you have to fish there a while to learn the ins and outs of the place, then you'll do great.  The park is my favorite place to fish.  I'm there at least once a week.

size wise whats the average you guys have caught there? not trying to drive far to catch the little guys as the pond by my house has nothing under 2.5 - 3 lbs. ive heard of guys pulling some 8+ lb fish out of suffolk lakes

On average, you can expect you average fish at Lone Star to be about 2 lbs, but I've caught them as big as 9 lbs.  All the lakes are different, some have better fishing then others.  This time of year, it'd be tough fishing, but spring - fall, it can be outstanding.  What part of Chesapeake are you in?  Maybe one day this spring/summer, I can meet you at Lone Star and take you out.

yeah, I have not fished the Lonestar Lakes in over 10 years so, I would take Brayberry's advice above.

Lone Star has many lakes there:

 

Finger - Probally the least amount of fishing pressure here, one of the bigger lakes, lots of shoreline brush and long sloping points

Crane - Saltwater, fun for Catfish, Striper, and Redfish

Butler Tract - Most popular lake there, most fishing pressure, best launch ramp, bass averaeg about 3 lbs, usually suspended

Crystal - Very clear lake, holds HUGE BASS, very difficult to catch

Annette - IMO the hardest lake to fish at Lone Star, just tough

Rainbow - Smallest lake here, clear water, suspended bass, use soft plastics only

Wahoo - Poor fishing due to fish kill from hurricane and was never restocked, seems no fish 12 inches or better

Southern - Bigger lake, deep shorelines, little shallow water but when you find it, you'll find the bass

I Have a Love Hate Relationship with Western Branch, Lake Prince, and Burnt Mills. I have done my best at Lake Prince with 5 fish weighing in at 34 lbs all fish 6-8 lbs. and the next 15 times I went didnt get a bite with fish showing on the graph 

 

 

The suffolk lakes hold huge bass. but they dont fish like lakes. they fish like ponds. It sucks because they are large bodies of water that dont seem to pattern well. you will never become a better fisherman fishing out of the suffolk lakes. I still fish the suffolk lakes but i feel like im wasting my time. Sure I can "Practice technique" but I dont get to practice locating fish and developing patterns like I would on a larger body of water. I live ten mintues from lake prince so I fish that lake often. but its easy to get discouraged out on the suffolk lakes. you might have 5 great days of fishing a year but the other 30 are bust days. I Fished Lake Prince about 25 times last year  and had a 3 or 4  days where 5 fish weighed 20-30 lbs and the rest of the days i didnt even get a bite. where If i make the drive to Gaston/Kerr/James river out of 25 days I have my 2-3 great days of a 20-30lb 5 fish Stringer. but on the other days I still get bit and catch 10-20 fish in the 1-2 lb range.

 

Does that Make sense. I feel like you learn how to fish catching the 1-2 lbs and figuring out the seasonal patterns and once you have the school patterned getting the big boys to bite.

^^^  Yep, some of the toughest water I have fished. 

 

My profile picture is of a bass I got at Prince, but he is right on the money!  I caught this bass, then the next day, totally different conditions, I caught another similar, then nothing for the next 3 trips and I stopped going.

 

Same thing with Lake Cahoon for me, it looks great there are big bass in there, but locating them is tough.

I cannot help you with the South Side, but 

Prince is one of the places I've been told is 

a "must visit" by a friend who has had good 

success there.

 

For me it's all on the Peninsula. Primarily fishing 

at Newport News Park, Harwood's Mill, then up

to Williamsburg at Wallermill Park. Also have hit 

Beaver Dam Reservoir in Gloucester, which is a 

nice fishery.

I am gonna be in the chespeake area in 4 days and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get on some fish at a lake with boat rentals within a 2hr drive? It would be greatly appreciated for help.
