bass stalker Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 What is a good over all line and pound strength to use for flipping? mono? fluorocarbon? braid? Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 The only type of line I flip jigs with is braid, sometimes it 30lb. and sometimes it's heavier. I will, however, occasionally pitch a crank. I'm currently using Yo-Auri Hybrid Fluoro-Nylon which replaced Original Stren as my line of choice. Quote
SpencerLittle Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 20lb flouro or 20lb big game. 25 or 30lb for jigs. Big games is hard to beat. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted December 27, 2014 Super User Posted December 27, 2014 Some like fluoro some like braid. It's all a personal preference thing. I like to use braid, because my flipping setup does double duty as a frog setup. I would not use mono. As for # test, I would use 65# for braid and 20# or 25# for fluoro. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 27, 2014 Super User Posted December 27, 2014 I go braid. 30lb or 50lb depending on the cover. I often use a fluoro leader as well (15-20lb), that also depends on the cover too. Quote
bass stalker Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Thanks everyone for your help and advice. Quote
blongfishing Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 I agree on the #20 flouro. I am not a braid guy. I have one spinning rod with braid and have only used braid on my jig rod once. I do fine in tournaments on flouro but most guys use braid. If I was going to use braid and when i have used it i go with #50 give or take depending on cover. Quote
kikstand454 Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 ? Flipping. .... as in using your left hand to feather out a length of line and then placing the lure in your next target without ever disengaging/ engaging the reel? Braid. 65#.- at least. I guess if your flipping super clear lakes up north with mild cover then I could see some of these lighter line suggestions. .... Quote
Super User Gundog Posted January 4, 2015 Super User Posted January 4, 2015 30 lb power pro braided line. I'm interested in flourocarbon line but don't know enough about it except that its expensive. If anybody has info on flourocarbon lines like knots to use and how to keep expense down post it. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted January 4, 2015 Super User Posted January 4, 2015 I use 65 but i flip in heavy vegitation. I only use braid as I am in heavy cover so there is no reason for a leader. The knot is also going to be a high failure point because your hook set with a heavy guage fliping hook is going to be massive. Flipping and punching is heavy duty fishing, and reducing failure points is a hight priority for me. Line choice may have you uping your choice like daiwa samuri braid is a lot thinner so most people run higher lb rated line. I like sonic braid but any brand will work. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 4, 2015 Super User Posted January 4, 2015 I like 50lb Power Pro for flipping but I use just about anything above 10lb test if the situation calls for it. Quote
ChrisWi Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I like a fluro line by me, natural clear lakes it's necessary. I would feel much more confident with braid but then I miss bites Quote
CCfootballchamps69 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 25-30 lb. fluorocarbon all the way. While braid is nice and it can double for throwing frogs as well I get a lot more bites using fluorocarbon. I did a test one day. I found a school of fish and I was whacking them. I decided to try to braid rig and the bite died. I picked up the fluoro and started whacking them again. I fish clear lakes so it is imperative I fish clear line. I do not like using a leader because there is just one more knot that could break or something could happen and you lose a big fish. Keep the setup simple either go full braid or fluoro. If your looking at cost fluoro is cheaper then braid. I have had good luck with P-line out here in the Northwest. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 Where you gonna flip that bait? Heavy cover and grass go with a 35# braid on a spinning rig. Bank fishing with wood and rocks go with an six or eight pound fluorocarbon on a spinning rig. Deep water to submerged cover go with a twelve pound fluorocarbon line on a baitcaster. Quote
The Next KVD Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 15lb P-Line 100% Fluorocarbon gets the nod for trees and docks. If I'm flipping grass of any kind its with 50lb Suffix 832 braid at the min. sometimes stepping up to 65lb. 1 Quote

AVIDBF2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 When it comes to braid to mono, it can really change how you manage your lures. If im using jigs with mono-I have to change my tactics etc. What is your contor like, if your flipping on a wooded rocky area, Fluro around 17-20 lbs would be good to go. If your Flippin to a foot of muck and weeds, then I like my braid. I tend to flip with mono in more Open-tinted waters. Then if its really Clear water, im back to Fluro. Im actually looking into this myself - http://www.mccoyfishingline.com/newsite/prod_line_xtreme.html Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 I've been using 50 lb Power Pro the last few years and it's done just fine. I'm planning on running some 50 lb test Berkley Professional Braid when the water softens up in a few months. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted January 7, 2015 Global Moderator Posted January 7, 2015 60# braid for punching 15# floro for moderate to scatterd grass 20# floro on dedicated jig rod regardless of cover Mike Quote
DTack Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 70lb Daiwa Samurai Braid is my choice around grass. Otherwise I like 20 lb sunline sniper. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 7, 2015 Super User Posted January 7, 2015 15# Yo-Zuri hasn't given me any reason to change. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 8, 2015 Super User Posted January 8, 2015 Heavy Vegetation -65# braid Anything else-20# fluoro Quote
