Spinning Reel With Fc Problems...

I spooled on some 8lb sunline sniper on my new spinning reel Christmas morning and I made sure I put it on the correct way and everything, even put KVD L&L on it and soaked the spool in warm water like some people suggest and still the line twist like crazy and wants to jump off the spool....

Gonna go to academy and get some 10lb braid and use the rest of this sunline as leader I guess because I just don't know what went wrong with this FC.

That's the line... Not anything you done. You will probably like the braid better anyhow... I use a soft CX or Silverthread or even # 6 hybrid line.. But I know you like braid, I say give it a whirl! Good luck!

Hm. What kind of reel? I have 8lb Sniper on a couple Stradic 2500FJ and I've yet to see a single twist.

Its a 6930X pflueger president, I know many people use sniper and love the line.

I've read about people soaking their spools in water. I've never done this and have never needed to. Did you put KVD L&L on before you soaked it? Silly question but if you did, that was a silly thing to do. 

 

I use 7# sniper on a smaller, 1000 size shimano /w no coiling issues. 

 

Run all the line out and attach it to some sort of immobile object. (after you make sure there's no line twist in the spool) Put some KVD L&L on a rag, run the line through the rag and reel the line in. Spray the spool down once more quick and let it sit over night.

I put KVD L&L on it while it was still on the original spool and let it soak for a few hours then spooled it on my reel and took the reels spool and put it in warm water for around 5 minutes then when I took it back out sprayed more KVD L&L on while it was still on the reel then this morning before I went out fishing I put L&L on all my reels that didn't have braid.

Idk what the problem is, I even trolled my line out and made sure it had no line twist, this somewhat helped but it still coiled and started twisting like crazy after alittle more fishing, I was using a drop shot with a VMC spin shot hook and I don't believe that would cause massive line twist.

Never used the Sniper stuff but that's just the nature of FC... I'm spooling mine with braid that way I have both sensitivity and handling.

Yeah I'm about to head to the store and I'll grab a spool of 10lb-15lb braid, I'll try FC again eventually but don't feel like fiddling with it at the moment.

I know Aaron martens dropshots on straight FC so I figured I'd give it a shot before I went to braid but so far I don't like it very much...

Might check your line roller bearing as well. If it's seized up, it can twist up your line something nasty.

You can boil fluoro to the point of melting it aaaaand....... ( a little suspense ) .....the memory is still going to be there, soaking spools in warm water works only in nylon line filled reels, don't work on FC and don't work on hybrid line.

I know Aaron martens dropshots on straight FC so I figured I'd give it a shot before I went to braid but so far I don't like it very much...

 

Solution to that is to tie on an extra long FC leader

for dropshotting. Some guys tie on 20-40 feet depending

on depth needed (that I've read, can't remember where).

 

I know Gary Yamamoto likes to use a long leader because

he prefers to fight a fish close to boat with the leader knot

already on the reel....

I didn't know this, figured it worked on fluorocarbons too.

I underspool Fluoro just a bit. It seems to help with the jumping.

 

It could also be the reel. My President twists line very well.

I would suggest manually closing the bail by hand and not over filling the spool in addition to what you tried. Since doing these things I have had zero issues over the years.

I close the bail by hand and keep the spool about an 1/8th of an inch from full.

It isn't the reel, roller bearing or closing the bail by hand, it's the nature of the beast using f/c, mono or copoly lines. Upon retrieve the line gets wrapped around a fixed spool on a spinning reel, a b/c spools the line straight on like a winch, so no line twist.  What can exacerbate the twist is a lure that turns over a lot, that will affect a b/c as well but to a lesser degree.

You can soak the line (don't need more than 10 minutes) or use a conditioner, that does not address line twist, that addresses coiling which is a separate issue.  Between line twist and coiling I prefer braid, no muss no fuss just go fishing, if abrasion or stealth is an issue just use a leader.

I throw 6 and 8 and 10 lb fluorocarbon lines on spinning gear with minimal problems.  Every so often you need to drag the line behind the boat the straighten it out - not a big deal.  Something else to consider, if you are certain that the roles bearing is working correctly and you are certain the the line is spooled correctly, it could be that your reel is just a line eater.   Over the years, I have had a few reels that I just couldn't get line to work right on.  10 to 15 minutes of casting ( and it didn't matter what kind of lure) a jerk bait or a small crank or some kind of soft plastic and the line would be fouled.   True, this hasn't happened to any reel that I've bought lately.  Of the ones I remember, one was an 80's era Mitchell (one of the first skirted spool reels), a couple of BPS house brand reels, a cheap Eagle Claw branded reel are the ones that come to mind.

 

As far as cheap reels go, I have had decent luck with the US reels super casters.  They cast good and the wider spool gives less line issues.   Down side is that after a couple years they feel just a little "loose" all over and they start to make noise.  All my super casters except for one are on the bench now.  I'd give them away, but I'd feel bad about giving someone else my problem reel, so I don't.   So far, I am having decent results with mid-range Shimano products, as far as spinning reels go.

I spooled some 8# Berkley Xl fluorocarbon on a spinning reel today and filled it within 1/16" of the lip and it didn't seem to be coiling. Might be worth a try.

Using fluorocarbon for leader is the simple solution.

10' will last a long time!

I'm not being a smartalec when I say this but this is why I use SuperSlick and a fluoro leader. I read about everyone using fluoro and loving it so I thought I was being left out. I tried and tried with all the best fluoros money can buy. Needless to say I have a lot of leader material now. Braid is where it's at....don't buck it....feel the flow....harness the good, block out the bad....you pay your quarter and the carousel goes up and down, round and round....circular....all good things.

The L&L works best when you apply it, then let it dry into the line overnight. That lets it bond with the FC. Then applying a small amount to the outside of the line right before fishing seems to help as well. I'd try invisx. It's softer and more supple than other FC's i've tried, and I've heard it works well on spinning outfits. That is, if you're still interested in using straight fluoro. Personally I will choose braid every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I use seagar red label 8# on my shaky head rods. Never a line twist problem.
