Josh VanderMeer Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 what do u crank bait making enthusiasts use for a clear coat???? i have been using some urethane that my dad had laying around but i find that it has a really potent smell and im not sure how much the fish would like that.... and also the urethane is kinda messy :-/ Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted July 20, 2007 Super User Posted July 20, 2007 Devcon 2 Ton epoxy. It's extreamly durable. Mix it up, brush it on and then put your lure on a drying wheel (or sling it around with a pair of pliers). It'll give you a nice clean, clear, hard finish. Quote
harshman Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 The decvon 2-ton epoxy will be what 90% of the guys on her recommend. It is an easy product to use and looks great when it dries. Harshman Quote
dampeoples Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I'm that other 10% I use Dick Nite Lurecoat, it's a solvent based clear, so it's gonna smell, but it has none of the disadvantages of Devcon, such as self-leveling and dry time, but I still use D2T from time to time. Quote
BIG M Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 devcon 2 ton is the easiest to learn to use IMHO. go to walmart and in the craft section get a pack of plastic water color brushes. Get an old coke can and cut the bottom off, now cut a piece of stiff wire and form a U shape. Now put some epoxy in the outside portion of the can and use the wire to mix around for about 45 seconds. Paint on your lure a fairly thick coat and rotate for about 20-30 min then hang to dry about 10 hrs. Is that clear as mud or what. Quote
SecondWind Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hey Big M......what??????.....LOL I am interested in the proccess though. Quote
BIG M Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Clickstreet, which part of that mess did you not understand. Craft paint brushes, cut in half and use 1 end to stir the epoxy. Bottom of a coke can is uniform and smooth makes for a good mixing platform. The bait has to be rotated until the epoxy is set or you end up big saggs on your bait. I hope this is easier to understand. Quote
SecondWind Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 OK got it that time....thanks Big M.....hey how do you rotate your lures? Thanks again Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted October 30, 2007 Super User Posted October 30, 2007 OK got it that time....thanks Big M.....hey how do you rotate your lures? Thanks again I made a loop with a wire coat hanger, then twisted together the ends. You can then attatch your lure to the wire hanger, then put it in a drill, and tape down the button. Quote
BIG M Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I made a drying wheel with a rod turning motor and a 10 inch round disc. Mounted the motor on top of a 2x4 and mounted the 2x4 to a plywood base. I got the motor from a rod building supply site for about 15 bucks and I've be turning baits on it for about 5 yrs. You really want something to turn baits about 8 rpms. Quote
