Super User Bankbeater Posted December 23, 2014 Super User Posted December 23, 2014 I just got a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft. They said I had a virus on my computer and I needed to give them my personal information so they could remove the virus. I told them I was going to call the cops and not to call again. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted December 23, 2014 Super User Posted December 23, 2014 Nice work, I would call & turn over the number asap.... Quote

Unfortunately this is "common", and not just Microsoft. Microsoft is, in fact, suing over this very type of scam. http://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2014/12/18/microsoft-takes-action-tech-support-scammers/ 1 Quote

Tell the caller that you'd be happy to provide any sensitive information he desires, as soon as he connects you to "The Interview" on Microsoft Xbox (meet nonsense with more nonsense) Roger 1 Quote

bassinOUT89 Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 I keep getting phone calls for ADT. not sure if its a scam or not but my pitbull is my alarm system. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted December 25, 2014 Super User Posted December 25, 2014 Get that Microsoft call from time to time. Numerous attempts to get them to stop calling has failed. Annoying. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted December 26, 2014 Super User Posted December 26, 2014 This problem will only be solved when the scam artists start bugging the Hollyweird types. Look at all of the sudden outrage on hacking when Sony got the same treatment regular folks have been putting up with for years. Quote
Thornback Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I get the "your computer is infected" call about once a month. The guy has an Indian accent. I always tell them I don't own a computer. That will get you a long pause 2 Quote

Super User HoosierHawgs Posted December 26, 2014 Super User Posted December 26, 2014 Bad stuff man... This plus the hacks against MSoft and Sony aren't good either.. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Bad stuff man... This plus the hacks against MSoft and Sony aren't good either.. I don't view it as bad as most people. All they did is shut down the gaming servers. Compared the the Sony hack a few years ago. This is just a inconvenience. Quote
Catch 22 Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Sometime when I have time,I will stretch them out and hold them on the phone as long as possible. Other times I will lay out some of the most vile language and expressions that come to mind. What ever you do ,don`t try to logic with them. If you cooperate and do what they say, your puter will lock up tight and you will be held financial hostage. You may or may not ever get it back to normal. That happened to a naive friend of a friend C.22 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 Usually I just hang up but the last time they called I decided to mess with them. He said his name was Mike "I think?" and said my computer was sending him error messages. When he ask my name I said Habeeb then ask if he knew the Slum Dog Millionaire? He hung up without fixing the error messages, Microsoft systems support needs to hire some better employees. Allen Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 I build my own computers, and I am my own tech support. Makes life so much easier in this wonderful digital world we live in. Hootie Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 The easiest way to deal with these people is simply, to hang up, But just before you "disconnect", hover your phone over the toilet bowl, flush, then hang up. 2 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 I thought I should post a comment because I got calls like that, too. The latest was last week from this 425 phone number. Caller claimed their server monitored a virus in my computer and that he needed to gain remote access to fix it or else the virus would leak personal info saved on my computer to the cyberspace. Lol! As much as he was trying to scare into following his instructions, I knew better. I hung up. He just wasted a good 15 minutes of my time. actually you wasted 15 minutes of your own time. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 The most interesting calls are those that show your number on the caller ID display. We never answer a call that has our number as the caller. Actually we do not answer any calls where we do not recognize the number. If the caller wants to speak with us, they can leave a message, identifying themselves. 2 Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted December 28, 2014 Super User Posted December 28, 2014 I can't believe there are people stupid enough to fall for scams Quote
