ChrisWi Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Don't tell him that... Not all M power rods are the same and there are plenty of jigs in the 1/8oz - 3/8oz range I'd throw on a M/F and never look back. I'd rather flex a hook then not hook it in the first place. I always find myself wanting a heavier rod while fishing Quote

You not gonna be fishing 1/8Oz jigs with a gigantic flipping hook on them so backbone won't be a problem, buy the rod that will throw the weights you need/want to throw and in the OP's case that very well may be a M powered rod. kingmotorboat Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 Whoa guys didn't mean to start any trouble lol. Looking into the tatula and the klx and kistler magnesium. All in medium heavy. Quote
desmobob Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Looking into the tatula and the klx and kistler magnesium. All in medium heavy. I didn't mention the KLX because it's a bit above your listed price range. I have two of them and I think they are NICE rods. Tight lines and Merry Christmas, Bob Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted December 24, 2014 Super User Posted December 24, 2014 Just remember Op that this is the Internet and I'll leave it at that. The 1/8oz reference was more referring to my t rig weight. My jig choice is usually 3/8 5/16 or 1/41/8 with 5" + worm will be more about 1/4 +1/4 jig with trailer is closer to 3/8 And so on and so on. A mh would be fine. There's more to picking a rod than just power. Plus there is no industry standard on labeling a rods power. I have a heavy rod that I'd throw a 1/4 jig with trailer and it'd do fine. Also fluoro has some stretch and that can help too. Quote
masterbass Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I just picked up my first klx recently and am really looking forward to catching something. Quote

I can cast 3/16 fine on a 7 MH. I just think a MH is much more versitile than a M. Especially if he's going to fish around any cover. Good look turning the head on a 5 pounder with a M. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted December 24, 2014 Super User Posted December 24, 2014 I'm just trying to get you to realize that not all mediums and medium-heavys are the same, Your telling him not to buy any medium power rods. I have a medium power rod rated up to 3/4oz but what I can't use it for jigs because it doesn't have enough backbone? Of course medium heavys would be good and probably even a better choice in a lot of cases but don't tell some guy that you shouldn't fish jigs on a medium power rod because that is just bad advice. I'd get something rated for around 1/4oz to 1oz and could care less if they slapped the words medium or medium heavy on the side. 1 Quote

And chances are a medium doesn't have enough backbone. If he wants something that can effectively fish both a MH is a better choice. I had a few M action rods and not enough power to set the hook on a long cast or when I'm fishing cover. M action rods have there place but to me it's not for jigs/t-rigs. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted December 29, 2014 Super User Posted December 29, 2014 Right now you can find the previous Gen Crucials on clearance. This would be the best imo. As for the standard price I'd say Fenwick Aetos and Elite Tech Smallmouth. I haven't bought or used the latest ET, but the previous generation is pure awesome. Best bang for your buck. 1 Quote

You can turn the head on anything if you have the drag set properly and give it time. 1 Quote

BTW, my biggest fish ever, a 35 lb. carp, was caught on a 9' fiberglass rod (designed for fishing live nightwalkers) with the drag locked down and using 8 lb. Trilene XL that had been on the reel for a few years. Definitely a fight that lasted more than a few minutes. Somewhere in the area of 25 to 30 minutes if I remember correctly. Lots of fun. Quote

I know, but if he's fishing cover you don't have time. I steelhead fish with 6 pound test, I know. Quote
Solution kingmotorboat Posted December 30, 2014 Author Solution Posted December 30, 2014 So i ended up with a 6,10 medium *** with 12# invisx. Can't wait to use 2 Quote
John G Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Kistler Magnesium, iRod Genisis 2 is popular, Powell Inferno. There are many choices in this price point. A MH/F will probably do the trick unless you're using heavy wire hooks, then maybe get a heavy. Have you used the rods that you are recommending? Quote
masterbass Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 So i ended up with a 6,10 medium *** with 12# invisx. Can't wait to use I have this same rod and use it for a lot of different things. Great rod and handles light t rigs/jigs just fine. It also makes a great jerk bait/top water rod. Quote
ChrisWi Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Have you used the rods that you are recommending? used a magnesium once and I own a inferno. 1 Quote
