Senko Rod

Does anyone have a dedicated senko rod/reel? If so, what type (feet, pound line, reel)? I know some people don't approve of them, but I am not looking to start an infamous "senko debate", just looking for some recommendations.

I use a 6'9 Mh/F Kistler KLX with a Lews Tournament Pro 7.1:1 and 12lb fluorocarbon line for my weightless senko setup and love it.

Right now, I'm using a Curado 50E and a Falcon T7 micro in finesse jig. This is an absolute joy to fish. I throw 3", 4" and 5" all weightless and either wacky or texas. I have a new setup that I'm gonna use. A Curado I and a Edge First Strike 693. Still waiting on the rod, it was the Kickstarter deal.

I prefer spinning tackle. Generically, 7' MF; specifically, St. Croix LES 70MF/ Stella 2500FB/ Yo-Zuri #6.

I use a Falcon Bucco 6'10 MH bait casting rod, a Chronarch 50 reel and 15 lb fluorocarbon  ( brand varies) to throw wacky senkos with.  Tx rig senkos, well I generally throw some senko imitation when I am going tx rig, and I generally throw them on spinning gear with 14 lb Firelinej and a 15 or 20 lb fluorocarbon leader.

I don't have a dedicated senko rod, but the one that I throw them mostly on my 6'8" spinning St.Croix mojo bass wacky rod. It is an extra fast action rod and it is works perfectly fine for senkos. I use a shimano Sahara 2500 with 15 lb power pro braid. I also throw drop shots and sometimes shaky heads on it.

For unweighted senkos I like a St. Croix LEC68MXF/Curado 51E.

I use an Orochi XX EMTF for weightless 5" senkos. 12lb Tatsu. For the smaller ones, I use a 7' MF spinning, or my 6'10" medium casting Expride, with 8lb Tatsu.

I use a dx 743 and tdz r+.  If I'm t-rigging with weight I use a x7 extreme mission.

I have several rods that can throw them. Unweighted 3 and 4 inch, it's a Chronarch d7 with shallow avail spool, 10lb sniper and dx 742 casting rod. 5 inch senkos can be thrown on any normal gear so I don't have a huge preference as I have several rods that work fine. Line choice depends on cover.

Depends on the body of water, cover and structure I will be fishing.

 

BAITCASTER

First the reel:  7:1 Shimano spooled with 12 pound fluorocarbon line with a weedless 1 or 1/0 hook.

Then the rod: 7 feet or longer medium heavy with a fast tip.

 

SPINNING RIG

First the reel: Shimano 2500 size Stradic with 6 or 8 pound fluorocarbon line.

Then the rod: 7 feet or longer medium heavy with fast tip.

 

I like the spinning rig best for close in fishing in wood or grass.

 

Will use the baitcaster to fish farther back and make longer casts to the targets.

 

When fishing ponds I scale down to a Shimano 2000 spinning rig on a 7 foot BPS Extreme medium heavy rod.

 

Go to YouTube and watch some of the pros' videos regarding their Senko setups.

Team, let me add one more thing to take into consideration when purchasing a rod.

 

"How tall are you?"

 

Being serious.

 

You can purchase a rod that can be too short or too long for the Senko and it can mess up your pitching, flipping and casting.

 

Go to a local tackle shop and try out a number of rod lengths to find one that is best for our height.

 

And you can throw into the equation if you are fishing from a boat or the bank.

A 7'6" Med/Fast SC Legend Elite, Pflueger SupremeXT w/6#Nanofil--used to catch PB

An 8' ML/Mod SC Avid, Stradic 1000 w/10# PPS8S

The Avid is more fun to use actually my favorite rod for senkos.

+1 for the OrochiXX EMTF. Fished it for the first time today with a weightless Texas rigged 5" Senko. I could sling that Senko a very good distance with little effort. Using a Metanium HG with 40lb braid on it. No fish on it yet because the wind wasn't cooperating today. Really looking forward to landing the first one with it. The action of the rod is very impressive, as is the weight and balance. Already thinking about grabbing a second one! It feels that good......

I have an older black Cumara 7' 2" MHF baitcasting rod that was advertised as a Senko / Fat Ika rod.  I'd be lying if I said it was my dedicated Senko rod.  I don't use Senkos enough to have a dedicated rod.  This rod has seen more spinnerbaits than Senkos.  I'm using 10# fluoro on it with a tuned and upgraded Fuego.  However, Senkos are something I am going to try and force myself to use more often.....if I can find the patience.

So it seems like a longish rod (about 7 feet) is best... Thats sort of what I was thinking, my 6'2" wasn't really slinging them last season. Thanks for the advice!

I use a 6'8" MXF BPS JM Carbonlite(white one) spinning rod with a Abu Garcia Orra S30 with 10lb power pro to a 10lb mono leader. Throws senkos like a dream and is super sensitive on those really light bites.

I have both a spinning and a baitcasting setup for senkos.  My accuracy with a baitcaster is still a bit suspect, especially with trees and overhangs and docks.  So I use the baitcaster when I am casting along the shoreline ahead, if it's clear casting.  For close in, and places where I need to try to skip it, I use the spinning setup.

 

Spinning:  SC Legend Elite 6'8" MXF with a Shimano Stradic CI4 2500 and 10 lb Sunline Supernatural mono

Casting:  SC Legend Extreme 6'10" MXF with a Shimano Core 51Mg7 and 12 lb Sunline Supernatural Mono

I like 7' MF spinning with 20# Power Pro braid. Add a flouro leader if you want. 

 

Spinning is easier to skip under docks and trees/bushes

I tend not to have dedicated rods for a particular technique, but I've always had a dedicated Senko combo and it always worked very, very well for me.  It was a rather inexpensive Berkley 6' MHF rod with a 2000 size spinning reel and either 8 or more frequently 10 pound mono.  I tend to rarely use a MH action for my waters and my fish, but this action worked well for Senkos, and I rarely fish anything heavier than 8 pound test on my spinning reels but again, it worked great and I loved the combo.  I've mostly retired it now for better quality gear but I don't see that I catch more on the higher end stuff for this technique.  If I could have changed one thing about it, I probably would have gone to a slightly longer rod for those sweeping hook-sets, although I never go longer than 7' long, I'm a short guy and it just feels awkward to me.
