FunkJishing Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 If you had to use a 7 foot medium heavy rod and throw a 1/4 OZ jig with a 3/0 hook what size line would you use? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 16, 2014 Super User Posted December 16, 2014 Depends on the size wire of your hook & where you plan on throwing it ~ As long as the hooks is not a "Light" wire deal, this should cover it. Open water ~ 12 lb anything seems right Medium cover - 15 - 20 lb anything including braid - (except rock or bridge pilings) Dense cover - 40-50 lb braid. A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 17, 2014 Super User Posted December 17, 2014 Most of my MH rods carry 12# mono. Any lure that light normally gets thrown on a Medium rod. If I planned on using a MH rod on a regular basis to cast a 1/4 oz. jig, the first thing I would do is haul out all my MH rods (of the desired action) to see which one handles that weight the best. A lighter line should help distance a little, but the most important thing will be the rod, second the reel, and last the line. 1 Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I would throw 10 or 12 lb fluoro. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted December 17, 2014 Super User Posted December 17, 2014 20# braid 1 Quote

The line needs to be able to put bass in your boat under these conditions.Tom 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 17, 2014 Global Moderator Posted December 17, 2014 Where I'm throwing it is going to be a big deciding factor on that one. Normally, 12-15 pound will be fine but in heavier cover you might need to go to 17-20 pound. 1 Quote

Depends how well that particular rod will load up. 1/4 oz is a little light for many mh rods, but with the added trailer it should be ok. Just using a lure weighing 1/4 oz I'd probably be using a med rod. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted December 17, 2014 Super User Posted December 17, 2014 agree with 20lb braid, always adjust a small topshot of FC weather it be 12-15lb. Quote

I have a medium fast action 6'3 casting rod with 14# copolymer. do you think that'd do the trick well enough for the 1/4 OZ jig with a 3/o hook? Quote
