Vises For Working With Lures (Not Flies)

Happy holidays, everyone!  I'm just getting back into freshwater fishing after 30 years of frequent moves, deployments, etc.  I saw a video clip in which he used some kind of vise setup to stablize his lures while he changed out the treble hooks and adjusted the bill on a pretty good sized bait.  I can't seem to find anything on the market except fly-tying vises.  Am I wasting time looking for a vise product made for working lures?  Any suggestions from you experienced folks?

Heavy duty jig tying vise (Griffin MT Mongoose) may be what you are looking for or a general use Zyliss bench vise, very handy.

Most guys use bench vises but a good jig-fly vise will work depending on what you want to do with the lures. Fly and jig tying vises are precision tools, they will hold on to a small area and keep it from slipping under normal pressures but it isn't going to take any type of banging or hammering and even using a dremel is something I would not do on my jig tying vise.  What you would probably want is what is called a hobby vise or sometimes called a jewelers vise.

I have a terra vise with a round base.  Clamps move and can never get the correct angles you want.

I use a cheap Cabela's fly vise that I paid $20 for. I have to adjust it every few jigs but it works just fine.

Any vise that is made for saltwater fly tying will be more than adequate for use with any FW bass fishing lures. I have used a Griffin Patriot Vise for years to tie large flies meant for striped bass and even school bluefin tuna. Another very popular vise  among SW fly tiers is the Regal vise which is another topnotch vise.

I have used my vise to wire tie skirts on jigs and wire tie skirts on  spinnerbaits and chatterbaits sporting  big 5/0 hooks.

I've also used it to tie bucktail on 3 and 4 oz saltwater jigs sporting 7/0 and 8/0 hooks.

I once broke the jaws on a Thompson "A" vise doing this. I just replaced the normal jaws with a heavy duty set and all was well. I could still handle the big 8/0 SW hooks as well as the size 20 hooks for trout flies.

I used a cheap fly wise for awhile now I use a small smooth jaw swiveling bench vise I found on ebay for 17$  It helps a lot when you pull on the rubber to cut.

I agree on the Regal...come in several sizes..bit spendy but great vises.

I use the peak vise, which you can interchange the clamps for different hook sizes, this one is great with the option to put a mouth for big hooks and a mouth for fly tying (which I love to do)
