When is the best time to fish BuzzBaits? Do you use a skirt or grub? What equipment? Basically, I want to know everything I can about BuzzBaits.

Braid is a good choice as far as line goes. 20-50 lb depending on the size of the buzz bait and cover. I like a softer rod, like a medium-fast, that usually comes down to personal preference. A fast reel is ideal, 7:1-9:1. I don't use trailers just skirt. Best times to fish them can be spring through late fall, depending on where your fishing. Mega strike cavitrons and strike kings are good choices as far as the buzz bait itself goes. 1/4-3/8 seems to be the ideal weight.

Baits linker buzz shad, and cavitrons, reel 7:1:1 rod MH is all I use and 14lb mono. I fish non skirted most of the time. I don't like lakers either

Also the snag proof Bobby's buzz frog can be killer in ponds and around weeds. Throw it on your frog set-up of course.

i love to throw a buzzbait, from the spawn pretty much until late fall i got one tied on. its a great way to catch fish in the rain and its my go to to catch schooling bass. i throw it on 20 lb mono on a 7 foot medium heavy fast rod with a 7.1 reel. my favorite buzzbaits are the simplest ones. i really like the cheap ones from walmart, i tweak them a good bit to increase performance. I always throw a skirt and sometimes a zoom split tail spinnerbait trailer. depending on the lake and size of bass im looking for. i do believe throwing a trailer on a skirted buzz bait will decrease number of bites but will get bigger bites. i always throw a trailer hook as well. I only throw two colors, white and black. 95 percent of the time i use a white buzzbait. i throw a black one at night and when theres a really bad storm coming tho.

MegaStrike has just come out with a 1/2 ounce version which I am VERY excited about.

My collection of Cavitrons spans a decade or so. I still fish my original black on black.

This is a great buzzbait!

MegaStrike Cavitron is the first buzzbait I've thrown (this morning actually) that tracks straight. Booyah, Warrior baits, and Strike King all had a mean left curve I could never fix. Very impressed with Cavitron right now.

I had my first ever buzzbait strike this afternoon on a pond.  I was using a War Eagle chartruse and white.  That fish hammered it but it got off.  Happened literally a foot from the shoreline too.  It was awesome.

 

Was also using strait 50 lb. braid.

Anytime! But I like to fish them at night because the strikes are viscous! I throw mine w/just a skirt, but a triler can be good for added bulk. I fish them w/a 6'6" medium rod and a 6.3:1 reel w/12#mono (my dedicated topwater/jerkbait setup) but you could vary well fish it on a spinnerbait set up as well. Crawl it just fast enough to keep it gurgling on the surface and let the fun begin!

Also, forgot to put one last thing.. If you miss a strike, quickly pitch a tube/stick worm or other soft plastic to the area of the strike, like w/any other topwater bait. They will eat it if you put it right in front of their face after they reveal themselves.

Big big big fan of Omega buzz baits. Crock-o-gator makes a great one too

I love buzzbaits, I've caught countless bass and one bluegill on them.Typically I use a 7 foot MH/MF Rod and a 6.3/1 reel, takes in 26 ipt, 12lb yo-zuri hybrid line, I also use my frog rod in heavy cover with braid. Anyway buzzbaits like any lure can be fished in a myriad of ways. If I'm burning them I use a double prop so it won't try to roll. If I'm fishing it slow them a Cavitron is great too. I like double props because of versatility, everything from slow roll creating a wake to burning it so fast I'm throwing duck weed a few feet in the air. Chartreuse and white with gold blades is my confidence bait. IMO there isn't a wrong time to fish one, wrong locations yes. Just fish it, be creative and have fun

If I have open water and temps above 50 degrees, I'm throwing a buzzbait

Both.

 

skirtless /w a grub is far more productive. 

 

I like to put a Zoom Horny Toad on the back of the buzzbait more than anything.

I've found in my waters than rising water far exceeds falling water for buzzbait productivity. 

 

I never use a trailer hook. If they are biting a buzzbait, I will alter it in a few different ways so they start hitting it correctly. This seems to work as I've never felt the need for a trailer hook. 

 

I use 2 colors. Black/gold blade and white/gold blade. Both 3/8oz Cavirtons. Might try a 1/2oz eventually but I can throw the ones I have now quite a ways.

this last season i had better luck with chartreuse and white but white and black also work good.. i think aluminum blades work the best... the trick it to make sure the bottom keeper is pinched on the shaft so it doesn't move. buzzbaits just seem to catch more fish if they make a squeaking sound.. the aluminum blade rubbing on the aluminum keeper is the best way to get that sound..

i don't really have a preferred brand as most all i've tried have caught fish...

you need a pretty stiff rod 6'6" or 7' mh probably work the best but i've seen buzzbaits fished with 5'6" to 7'6" rods and it worked...

i think the hardest part about buzzbaits is the hookset... you do not set the hook when you see the strike, wait til ya feel it... then set like you would a jig, hard and fast...

i usually start out a morning fishing a chartreuse/white buzzbait and fish it until the sun is all the way out or when they stop hitting it... i usually end a day fishing a black buzzbait just as soon as the sun starts to go down and until dark..

i start out fishing them slow but sometimes they want them pretty fast.. if i've tried fast and slow retrieves with no luck i usually switch to a megabass popper and will pop it and walk it until i figure out which they prefer..

when you get on a buzzbait bite it will be fast n furious...

also when i'm fishing any topwater bait i have my weightless 5" plastic swimbait ready to throw back to any fish that i miss or just seems to hit at the topwater bait..

I missed a fish today on a buzzbait and I think I tried to set when I saw him strike...just what you said not to do.
