Your buddy calls and tells you "fishing time, but one you can only bring 1 rod, and 1 lures"

What do you bring and why?

I bring another buddy who doesn't make stupid demands.

If I only had to bring one it would be a wacky rigged Senko on a medium spinning rod combo with 10 lb PP slick to 8 lb. fluorocarbon and a 1/0 gammy octopus hook. The other 10 rods on deck are just ornamental.

Medium weight jig on a 6'6" Medium Heavy casting outfit. Jigs at a mid range weight (3/8 oz or so) are really versatile. Put a rage craw trailer on the back, and clip the legs if the fish call for less action. That's what I would take if you could only have 1

Not necessarily an island.  Premise of the question was based on if you were stranded question and what would you bring.  You could just be out fishing. The question in hand though makes you think of what do you find dearest and most versatile within you arsenal.

I'm bringing my Fenwick HMG 6'6" spinning rod medium, Shimano Sahara spinning reel, eight pound Sufix Elite mono in clear, and a Texas riged five inch Yum-Dinger in Watermelon color.

You hooked into a 15 lb LMB with the tackle you brought with you....are you worried about losing it?

We are fishing, not necessarily catching, correct?

In that case, I wouldn't be particular on the rod/reel, but the lure would be a zara spook.  Stuck on an island for the rest of my life, I would get bored after a while throwing a jig or worm.  Even if you don't catch anything, fishing a spook can be entertaining.  Heck, you might even be able to catch a seagull.
