Pike And 16Lb Fluorocarbon

Will 16lb test sunline structure fc stand up to Northerns? With spinners I use wire leaders with barrel swivels but with swimjigs, grubs, and slug-gos I intend to just use the fc; no wire.

I've caught quite a few pike and lost quite a few lures on 12-15lb line.  Mostly jerkbaits and spinnerbaits.  Its risky.  If they hit the line with their teeth there is a good chance you will lose the bait.  They do make heavy FC leaders.  I'll be trying them out this year.

I caught this one on 8# line - doesn't mean I wasn't lucky. SO, my answer is, if your looking for trouble, it will probably find you.

I can't afford to lose big pike because of my line. I will look at getting some 80lb fluoro.

Lucky Craft Flat Mini MR.  Baits like jigs, texas rigs, swimbaits on jigheads or hooks, I use Cortland Toothy Critter when bass fishing.  It's tieable wire.  20# usually does it - look in your shops fly section.  Just attach it to your mainline with Alberto, and use whatever knot you like on your bait.  Heavy fluoro leader can be a pain.  I use it, but I make leaders with swivels and snaps using a crimp kit.

The vast majority of my home waters are loaded with pike.

 

Pike that strike soft baits like the ones mentioned, when not using some kind of wire, will bite me off more than half the time.

 

Toothy Critter as J mentioned works very well and does not reduce strikes.

 

American Fishing Wire makes Surfstrand Micro Supreme Wire which is also a very good & tie able product but it's a little $$$.

 

I use them both whenever I don't feel like losing baits because if I don't, I will.

+1 on the American Fishing Wire product.  I used it for years for inshore bluefish when fly fishing, and now, on freshwater northern pike.

 

I use 20lb. fluorocarbon leader (but it's Seaguar InvisX... probably the least abrasion-resistant fluoro out there) and northerns bite me off fairly regularly.

I have caught pike on 8lb fluoro, and had them bite clean through 20lb. It all depends on how far they engulf it. They do bite braid off much easier. That's one of the reason I use fluoro leaders, not to stop the bites off's, because it don't, but just to slow them down.
