Topwater Popper

I was wondering what line most of you prefer to use when throwing "popper" style baits. Do you use Mono or Braid??? And what pound test do you throw?? I have been using mono exclusively up until this point and was considering a switch to braid...  Thanks everyone for your comments!!

I use mono and braid all in one! I don't know if it's the best but it works for me! Specifically 10lb power pro and 1lb suffix.

i'll use both myself.

i was having a lot of fun this year throwing poppers on a spinning rod with 20lb braid.  just set your drag right and no worries.

I use mono Senshi over braid for poppers..

I use 10lb Power Pro on spinning gear (1/4oz or less) and 10lb Big Game on casting gear (over 1/4 oz).

Ive always used braid on topwater but switched it up this year for 8lb mono and actually preferred it. That little added stretch really helps for working poppers...

I'd use 8 to 12 pound suffix siege mono depending on how heavy a bait.

Thanks everyone, like i said, currently I am using 15lb Seaguar Senshi and havent had problems with it yet, just wasnt sure if there was a better option out there for me...

I have been using fluorocarbon in clear water even though it sinks and is "outside the rules" but I must say, I actually like Fluorocarbon now for all applications except when walking a lure, I like the way it creates drag and allows your popper to have more Pop to it when you have open water...I also just feel better with fluoro because of the stealth, I am forced to go straight braid in some lakes here in Florida and I would rather get less strikes than lose a fish because of a leader knot, plus 30lb test is not going to be stealth compared to 10lb diameter 50lb braid....I prefer to throw my topwaters and jerkbaits on #15 Pline CXX or Hybrid #10, but if I can go spinning, I love the Samurai 15lb 2 diameter and I color it the same as the camo lines so fish can't get a bead on it, but it is so thin, cast a mile, fish can't feel it, I can see it, and it is strong, plus knots are easy to tie on a shock leader if needed.

Test of line depends on where I am fishing. I mostly throw:

Spinnerbaits - 8 pound test

Baitcasters - 12 pound test

Braid - 30 to 65 pound test

Sure that would fit. They dont fight fish they just drag them in on pool cue rods and ski them straight to the boat.  What pro's do is as close to fishing as my going thru McDonald's drive thru is to me cooking.

the sinking property of fluoro does not make it a topwater line for me...

A fairly large diameter mono (15lb. Big Game or Sufix Elite) keeps everything riding high for poppers and chug type baits . For twitch or walk - the - dog type baits I would use the same brand monos and simply drop down to 12lb. so as not to impede the action . * One area where I believe mono / copoly lines excel is working the bait on a slack line and also in throwing the line back at the bait on the pause . Braid excels when you have cast out a great distance as the effort to work the bait is greatly reduced with braid (more efficient) . One day I will probably go with braid + mono leader (for just about everything)  but for now the larger diameter 15lb. monos I listed above keep everything riding high with good action !
