travis23 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 As some may know i was in the market for a new reel. Well i ended up getting a Px Type R annnnd i was kind of disappointed when i opened the package. Just a plain box with instructions and some oil. First impression was anything but satisfying. I spun the reel handle a few times and, blah, it sucked. (Wondering what a mistake i just made). Well after a couple hundred spins it started to loosen up more and more. At this point im happy haha. Freezing and pouring the rain i spooled it up and put it on a M veritas i had, and took it to the yard. I cant explain how stoked i am with this reel. Its my first high end reel as mine are revo sx and below. So maybe i dont have much to compare it to but either way its pretty sweet. I really dont know what i am going to use it for yet as someone here says they are more versatile than one would think. I have to make a decision by tomorrow on which dobyns to get in order to get the discount, but its between a dx743, 703, 702c, 733c. Sorry for the long post, but i was happy with this reel and if anyone would chime in to make this decison easier id appreciate it. I dont fish open water and no vegetation around here. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 4, 2014 Super User Posted December 4, 2014 Nice! Congrats, sounds like a great buy. I've eyed these for a while, but the price of entry is too steep for me. Easier for me to upgrade my Chronarch 50e reels over time But whatever you do, don't go to Hedgehog Studios and look at custom parts for the Px R!! Quote
travis23 Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 Oh i didnt pay for this haha this was a xmas present for my parents. All those custom parts are old new to me lol ive been eyeballing allllll of it for alooooong time. Soon i will get there!! This was a baby step in the right direction. Yean dude no bag, no nothing, and still kind of a disappointmemt but whatever no big deal. I tried posting a picture and for the life of me cannot do it? Help please! Quote
masterbass Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Congrats! I picked a pxl r at the end of the season and didn't get a chance to really use it yet, but I did some casting without catching and I love it. I just picked up a klx finesse rod for mine, but very nearly went with a dx 702/701. I'd go with the 702 between the rods you mentioned. Quote
5fishlimit Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Congratulations! I got mine at the beginning of this year, and understand what you mean about it loosening up after several turns of the handle. I took mine to my local tackle shop for a quick cleaning and it came back buttery smooth. These reels are much more versatile than I had thought, too. During the season I did everything with it from small finesse worms, dropshot, squarebills, and even frogs with 30# braid. Never once did I think that the reel was being under powered. Right now though since most of my other reels are also able to handle everything short of the finesse plastics that is what I am going to use it for moving forward. I had some of my best fishing days when I was using it with 8# Invisix, a 1/0 worm hook, and zoom finesse worms with an unpegged 1/8oz weight. Quote
travis23 Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 Yeah i think i want to throw weightless and up to 3/8 oz jigs. I only made maybe 10 casts with it as it was raining and freezing out, but i had the tension and brakes a little tight and i looking forward to loosening it up and seeing what it can do. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted December 4, 2014 Super User Posted December 4, 2014 I had 12lb Tatsu on mine and used it for light jigs, weightless senkos, etc. It is a real joy to fish with. Quote

Super User Tywithay Posted December 4, 2014 Super User Posted December 4, 2014 what rod do yoh have it on? 6'9" ML Kistler Helium3 Quote
travis23 Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 See i want like a M, or MH. Im pretty much stuck on Dobyns too. i have wanted a dobyns longer than i eger wanted a better reel. Ive heard great things mainly and i like the looks as well. 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted December 4, 2014 Super User Posted December 4, 2014 Dobyns makes a good rod. I ultimately found some I like better, but they have a good following for a reason. If you put that reel on a DX703C, I think it'd throw what you want just fine. Quote
Trey Harpel Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Love my Type R and other Various Pixys... Finesse to Beast it doesnt matter Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted December 5, 2014 Super User Posted December 5, 2014 If anyone knows Daiwas it's that man up above. I have a px68 which is close to the R model. I added 1 bearing per knob and a bearing to the level wind. Also Boca os7's to the spool. That upgrade right there made throwing lighter baits even easier. I have it on a Phenix Recon 2 713 and it's just so much fun to fish. I have a Dobyns 703c on the way and I believe this reel will have to have a brother in the near future. Soon as I sell my steez. As for what Dobyns rod. Choose that based on what's weights you'll be throwing. I think the 703 would treat you very well. Quote
DaveT63 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I've got a PX68L that I absolutely LOVE. Great reel. I did the PixZilla upgrades on mine, and there really isn't anything I won't use it for. I've never used a Dobyns rod, but can tell you that Pixy paired with a St Croix Legend Extreme 7' MF rod is just plain sick. Quote

Ive heard great things mainly and i like the looks as well. One thing I can't suggest enough is to physically put the reel on to any rod you are looking to buy with it. It is so lightweight that I had some trouble finding a rod that it balanced well on. I found (for me and how I fish) that a 6'6" MH/F rod paired exceptionally well. In my case I chose a Duckett MicroMagic. Good luck with your decisions! Any make sure to post a picture when you figure it out. Quote
Trey Harpel Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Im tellin ya dont be scared to throw heavier stuff on it... Ive got my Type R posted on a Savvy 735, with 50lb Braid throwing frogs on it... PX68 posted on a Champ 735C with 20lb Abrazx throwing Beavers into heavy cover and both are still mint shape with ZERO issues... Of course all my reels have the pixzilla upgrades and Boca bearings thrown in them... such a fun reel to use.. Quote
travis23 Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 I ended up getting a 703c. Its backordered til the 10th because dobyns was sellin like hotcakes for the sale. Itll be a long week lol Quote
travis23 Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 Hey trey can you make very long cast with the 50lb braid? That spool is shallow! I didnt get to really cast mine yesterday just a few short casts. I was wondering about larger diameter on it. Quote

I do use a backing as you dont need a ton just enough to fill the bottom of the spool, then I tie the braid on...I also dont use thick backing maybe 8lb line as it just needs to be there for the line to bite into thats it.. I also have a Zillion HLC paired with my champ 736 that I use for Long bombing frogs or in heavy matts... Quote

5fishlimit Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 also, im assuming you dont use backing? You can put some electrical on the bottom of the spool instead of using backing. You won't take up any spool space. Quote
