Most Abrasion Resistant Mono?

As the title says what in your opinion what is the most abrasion resistant monofilament fishing line?

I have lately been using sunline super natural but I have to change it out every time I go fishing.

Berkley Trilene XT and Suffix Siege are pretty good.  They are the only ones I use.  I mostly stick to XT because it's cheaper and has served me well for many years.  Not saying it is "most abrasion resistant" but it's d**n good in my opinion and I like the cost.

Berkley big game is the best ive tried. I had a 8lb wiper pull my line around a bridge piling and pull out at least 30 yards of line at a right angle to the piling and i reeled it in. I just knew the line was going to break, but it didnt and ive been using big game ever since when i use mono on casting reels

I always like Trilene XT for abrasion resistance until I tried the Berkley big game, I don't think you can get much better.

Many many moons ago back then in the 80´s I asked my friend pro baseball player Jack Pierce to bring me a spool of fishing line next time he went to Laredo, a week later he came with a spool of Berkley Trilene Big Game and that has been the line I have spooled in most of my reels since.

Yeah, that stuff might be the toughest line out there, but it has WAY too much memory,

especially for cold climate guys. If your priority is simply abrassion resistance, Big Game

might be the answer, but you should at least try P-Line CXX.

Of course, you, I and we can add several other BR members do actually make the differentiation, for us means monofilament and in the monofilament department we have: nylon, copoly and fc; but for most fellers mono still is wrongly used as synonimous of NYLON, even though we know it´s completely incorrect.

 

So I think he´s asking about which NYLON monofilament is the most abrassion restistant, for me it´s Big Game, now if he is on the look for an almost indestructible monofilament line then probably I would say P-Line CXX.

So Raul, is a fused micro filament line also "mono"?  I mean, it's fused so it's one filament now...

 

I'm teasing, I gave up trying to convert the masses, and simply assume that when someone says "mono," they mean nylon line.  When someone says "copoly,' they mean a line made up of two different types of nylon, blended. "Fluoro" means fluorocarbon (monofilaent) line, braid means braid.........

As far as toughest mono - Big Game is probably the toughest, but I think it's it's inherent elasticity that makes this so.  The most abrasion resistant mono nylon wateva line I've used (and still do for steelhead in creeks and rivers), even in sub zero conditions is....Sufix Siege.

I'd agree, except that Siege is so much tougher, but the difference in handling and memory so minor, it doesn't count.  Plus, Siege comes in orange, and that's mint.

Why is the line getting damaged? Are you using a baitcasting reel or spinning? #. Test?

PS, Maxima Ultra Green is very high abrasion resistance.

I've found that most mono lines are fairly similar in abrasion resistance, though some are slightly softer than others (they're usually marketed as such). It mostly comes down to diameter of the line. 8lb XT isn't really much more abrasion resistant than 8lb XL, it just has a much thicker diameter; it's thicker than 10lb XL.

Yo-Zuri maybe the leader in understating # test to diameter with the largest diameter compared to most manufactures, Sunline having some of the smallest diameters to # test when compared to most manufacturers.

Japanese lines like Sunline use the pound rating, or actual breaking strength. Lines in the US under rate the lines so that they can lay claim to the "strongest line in its class," since 8lb is actually 12lb.

Berkley 10 lb test XT = .014, XL = .011 for 10 lb.

Berkley Big Game, MaCoy, Maxima, Yo-Zuri = .012 for 10 lb

Sunline natural = .010 for 10 lb, .012 for 14 lb.

In the 10 lb test line Berkley Trilene XT is the largest diameter, Sunline the smallest. The highest # test I found for .012 diameter line was Sunline Defier Nylon at 15 lb test, expensive and good abrasion, strength and low memory line.

Most mono line has knot strength close to the label # test using a clinch or Palomar knot. If you compare by diameter; .012 D, Sunline is nearly 50% stronger!

Yes Big Game will coil, the sulation, change your line often. I pay $8 for a 1/4 spool which allows me to respool 5 calcuttas every other trip for 6-8 months.

The toughest and least amount of stretch I ever saw in mono is Cajun Clear lightning, it gets a bad rap because people put it on spinning reels and it wasn't designed for that, it even says round or low profile casting reels on the label. I saw this and it was cheap which gave me doubts but the stuff is so close to fluorocarbon that I stopped using it. I loved the fact it was clear and it was very close to clear as you can get, I'm talking almost fluorocarbon clear. Then it had almost no stretch, that is unheard of for mono, it has some but very little, again it is close to fluorocarbon in that aspect and the abrasion resistance was simply fantastic but it had so many of the characteristics of fluorocarbon that I stopped using it. Road Warrior is correct about the Big Game, I don't use it this time of year, now I use Silver Thread AN40 10# for jerkbaits, and Berkley Trilene XT Armor coated in 6# for my hair jigs and tubes, the Big Game gets stiff and the memory really gets bad when it is below 45 degrees.
