smallies24/7 Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I am getting into spybaiting this coming spring, I fish deep pressured smallies and it sounds great for me. Ive done my research and everyone recommends 4-6lb fluorocarbon. I was thinking, how would 10lb braid work? It had the small diameter needed(2lb), and it would be a lot stronger. What do you think? Super User Catch and Grease Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Why not??? You could always tie a leader on if that gives you more confidence but you still want the manageability of braid... 1 Quote

Yes just add a leader if you feel line visibility is a problem. 1 Quote
smallies24/7 Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 I will definitely run it with a leader. But I was asking because all I see is people running it on 4-6lb Fluoro... And it seems like 10lb braid is much smarter with the thin diameter required, but a lot more strength. Just wondering why Ive never seen it being done with braid... Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted December 2, 2014 Super User Posted December 2, 2014 I wonder if depth control plays a part in fluoro being the line of choice? I don't fish the Spybait but I know it's a countdown bait that is supposed to hold at a specific desired depth. I wouldn't think 10 lb braid would effect it that much, but who knows? Just a thought. Will Wetline Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 I have heard that braid with a short fluoro leader does not work. It may be that the braid dampens the subtle rolling action. Before fishing the Spin Bait 80 I researched videos and articles quite a bit and found only one comment about braid - and that was to use a 20' fluoro leader. A friend who fishes the same water used braid with a short fluoro leader and did nada in three trips. I had great success last year with 6 lb. fluoro and a 7' ML rod. Reel slowly without imparting any extra action and keep your rod tip low. This technique does take patience but you too may find it well worth it. Quote
Bass Junkie Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Braid floats, or at best has neutral buoyancy. Fluorocarbon has a much higher density, causing it to sink, which aids in the depth control of the lure. In addition, fluorocarbon affords a marginally higher amount of stretch, which can accentuate the subtle action of a spybait. Plus, any time that I'm throwing a Spinbait the water clarity is high enough I prefer a fluoro or mono. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 2, 2014 Global Moderator Posted December 2, 2014 I've tried both and had much better success with straight fluoro/mono than a braid/fluoro combo. I think like others said the buoyancy of braid kills the subtle roll of the bait. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted December 2, 2014 Super User Posted December 2, 2014 I hate fluoro but for that presentation I'd say it is a must especially if fishing deep. I tried it using mono from 10lb to 4lb and 6lb is what I settled on. My fishing partner ran his with 6lb fluoro and it held depth a lot better than mono and when braid was brought into the equation it killed the action even with a leader, I don't know why but it wasn't the same. I suspect it's because braid floats. The idea is to get it down there. Since FC sinks it's ideal for the technique. I have been researching this technique as well and intend to experiment with it once I can fish again. I prefer braid too but I need to see if I can get it down there with the leader too. Another option to consider is the larger spybaits which are coming out. I would suspect the heavier lures would not be impacted as much as the smaller ones using straight braid. Quote
