soopd Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I am trying to organize all of my hard baits. I putting most of them up for storage because I only use certain things for winter fishing. If I spray inside if each plano 3700 box with wd40, will it prevent rust? Do not want to lose money on good tackle. Thanks Quote
Super User Angry John Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 No that is not what you want to do. It was as a light solvent to displace water in airplane components. You can get some desiccant and put it in one of the slots. Put your boxes in a closet inside the house to prevent condensation from very cold weather. http://www.amazon.com/Silica-Gel-Desiccants-Packets-Dry-Packs/dp/B004FC53YC/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1417407920&sr=1-4&keywords=dessicant+packets Quote
Super User bigbill Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 I leave my tackle boxes open so the lures can dry after use. If I rotate my lures to store them I wash and dry them. Shore them when there completely dry. I use no rust protectant. There stored in a dry place. But we need to store our hard baits away front salted plastics too. I don't put plastics in the same tackle box as my hard baits. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 I'd suggest getting a packet or two of Zerust Tabs or Plastabs by Flambeau. If you already have Flambeau boxes, they make the Zerust dividers as well. They work great for preventing rust. Quote
hatrix Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 The WD stands for water displacement and the 40 is because it was the 40th attempt at making it. It was designed to prevent missiles from rusting if I remember right. Quote

I don't put anything in mine, but I made sure they were open and air dried before I put them away for the season. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Just make sure they're dry and store in dry place. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 I don't get rusted lures anymore since I let them dry and keep the salted plastics seperate. Quote
soopd Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 These are crankbaits that I do not use in winter. They are all dry. However, Biggest problem I have is when there is a Strike king crankbait with a hook that starts to rust and it just spreads. If I catch it early I remove that hook but sometimes I miss one. I will try some of those packs. Thanks Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Cut the swab off a qtip and drop it in the dividers or every other. This is cheap and very effective for rust free tackle. Let your stuff air dry as much as possible before sealing them up. Quote
