Texas Hawg Hunter Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Tonight I made a cast and was clearing a backlash when all the sudden I'm holding a broken off piece of line in my hand that had totally separated from the rest of the line in the spool. I retrieved my lure by taking up the line with my hands. This was 17 pound Stren Flourocast and my first spool of flouro...have been using it for a month or two. I heard flouro was brittle but geez. I'm taking this opportunity to try out braid for the first time. Purchased some 30 pound spiderwire ultracast invisibraid. Before this I used mono my whole life and never had this happen...not too excited about continuing with flouro. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 I use braid on every reel I use. So much better for line management. I can only recount 1 backlash so bad with braid, that I had to cut it out. But with mono or copoly, the cut outs were more frequent. With braid, I can get just about every backlash out. I use 20lb Power Pro. 30 is great as well. Use the remainder of your fluoro spool as leader material! Will be a much better scenario - IMHO!! 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Fluorocarbon is not very forgiving of less than perfect casting. Kinks will cause brake offs which send lures on a comet trip. I use decent line from p-line and sunline which have not caused me a bunch of problems. If you want to try one more time, i would get the P-line 100% in 10 or 12 and see if you have the same issues. I use the KVD line conditioner and seem to have had some real good luck on not having a bunch of issues. Braid is much easier to manage and is what i would recommend any person learning to use a baitcaster get started with. The best handling flouro i have ever used is the seaguar invesx. It is not as hard so it is not as abrasion resistant and has more stretch. 1 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Maybe try a better fluoro. I've never personally had this happen. I also haven't heard much positive about fluoro cast either. I bought a bunch when walmart did their clearance sales. I use it for leaders on my spinning rods since I change the leader every trip or more. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 1, 2014 Global Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 It will happen if you get a kink in your line, which commonly happens during bad backlashes. Have never fished fluorocast or heard much about it, quite possibly a reason for that I imagine. 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Not all fluorocarbon is created equal. There are some that will get damaged if you backlash, and there's others that are not as prone to that. Fluorocarbon is far from brittle, but it is weaker when dry. 1 Quote
Chief 2 Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I have had flouro break on me a number of times too. I am faithful about using KVD line conditioner also. The most recent break off was considerably deep in the the spool. Lost a good lure after a long cast AHH!!!!! The line I have been using is the BP brand. 1 Quote
Texas Hawg Hunter Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Thanks all! Based on your comments I'll try a different brand in the future. Flouro also seems like a "high maintenance" line which I don't like (line conditioner, weak when dry, etc...). I'm going to explore braid for a while and revisit flouro later. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 I have same problem with P-lines - CX and CXX. I never have that problem with any Yo-Zuri. This winter I'm transitioning to all Yo-Zuri (and a couple with braid.) Quote
boostr Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Yep, same issue here with the Stren flouro.... It blows. Now I only use it for leader, and works great. Bought some Suffix Invisaline, and will give that a try. I use braid on everything, but just want to use something on one set up without a leader knot affecting a pitch or a flip. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Depending on how often you fish, line that's 2 months old has gotten a lot of use. When I fished everyday working on sportfishing boats, it wasn't uncommon to replace line every few days from wear. Since switching to all braid on everything, you would be supprised how long each filler spool of FC or mono lasts when you only use about 10ft everytime you change out your topshot. And as long as it's kept in a cool dark place the fillers stay in great condition. Found when I tried fishing straight FC, any over run or kink in the line would result in weak spots which became really brittle. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted December 2, 2014 Super User Posted December 2, 2014 This is why i stay away from floro.the line and the knot are the weakest link between you and your fish. Why chance it all i use is yozuri and biggame never a problem and i never ever think about my line or my knot.Floros advantage is to minimal for me. I prefer my line to have many great traits then just one.And im gonna try braid again. And IMO all a person needs is mono and braid.i did it all back in the day with just mono salt and fresh and it never skipped a beat, anything else is just overthinking,i grew up poor and we ate most of what we caught never once did any of us complain about our line. And it might have to last a whole yr before we got new line. 1 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted December 2, 2014 Super User Posted December 2, 2014 Just Googled it. Looks interesting, don't know much about "hybrid" line. I tried braid for the first time today after this flouro incident and really like it. Yo-Zuri is a bonding of copolymer line and fluorocarbon. Hence "hybrid". It's rated strength is high, but so is the diameter for said line. I use YZH quite often for leader. For a looong time I used P-Line Floroclear - which I still love - which is a copoly line *coated* with fluorocarbon. But I've since bought several 600 yard spools of YZH for like $9 each. So I've been using it in 6 and 8 lb test on several of my setups (as leader tied to braided mainline). 1 Quote
PAGreg Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Repeating this very scenario multiple times this summer and losing 20+ yards of expensive fluoro each time is what finally prompted me to make the switch to braid with fluoro leader and I will never go back to straight fluoro. The kinking on the spool and breaking happened to me with seguar red label, invisx, tatsu, and finally FC sniper. The good news is that I have spools of leader material! Quote
