kikstand454 Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Got the brand new Carbonlite yesterday in 7.1. Took it out today on my 7' m/f veritas and threw a LC Pointer on it. What a blast! Match made in heaven! The carbonlite fits my hand perfectly, casts well and feels solid on the retrieve. Only caught one Dink this morning, but making cast after cast was a breeze because this rig is LIGHT! Just. ....wow! It threw the Pointer like there was no tomorrow. It took me a second to figure out the dual brake system. ...and its strange ( to me) dial set up, but it was pretty much set and forget and I was throwing into a stiff wind in no time. Pretty happy with my purchase...this is my first carbonlite. I got it at black Friday price with a free shirt. Shirt is awesome as well. EDIT: tried to post a pic but I just can't get that option to work anymore. It looks sooooooo sweet on my veritas- white on white! 4 Quote
cottny27 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Kickstand, have you been out anymore with the new Carbonlite and can review more? Any issues? I am looking at getting one during reel trade-in and maybe a 6'8" Duckett Ghost. I do have a Veritas at home..nice rods. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 15, 2015 Super User Posted January 15, 2015 Yeah, lets see a more in-depth review. I have a couple of the older gold Carbonlites. I am extremely pleased with them. Casting a #5 Shad Rap as far as a tuned and upgraded TD-Z 105H.....although that may be because of my not so great casting ability. Investment about 1/4 of the TD-Z. What I feel is very good distance for such light lures. Quote
cottny27 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The gold ones have the same frame as the Pro Qualifier I believe. I hear they are the best of the Carbonlites. Quote
kikstand454 Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Yeah I have an update. I want to replace all my stuff with this combo.....its that good. I keep trying to justify techniques with this rig just so I can use it. Its not bad for traps...the rod has JUST enough backbone to make it work. It KILLED as a jerkbait/topwater rig. Long smooth casts, straight into the wind with a spook. ...just a pleasure. It worked really well as a squarebill rod too. ..but I didn't spend too lunch time with that. The reel itself is pretty intuitive. Like I said its my first carbonlite, so I can't compare it to past models- but it is light and trouble free. Very smooth, Med/long casts with 1/4-1/2oz baits. The dual brakes took no time to figure out....as I said above. ... and I haven't needed to adjust them at all since. The only thing so far that is a "con" is that the top bar that goes across the reel- and is the access for taking the panel off- has backed out twice on me. I checked it both times and it seems that there is a retaining spring to keep the rod from coming out- but I wonder about my side plate. It did not become loose of anything when this happened- the only reason I noticed was because I was wiping it off. I have no idea how long it was loose like that. I tightened it back and then 2 trips later it did it again. It doesn't seem stripped- maybe my fingertight isn't enough! Lol. I will properly screw it down when I get the chance to. All in all I have had it out. ...maybe 7 times and what it has thrown the most is a 3/16oz weighted paddletail- swimming it over grass. Its biggest fish so far has only been about 3# but it has handled all of this with perfection. I'm currently moving so I'm off of fishing for the next few weeks- this one included. But I will abuse it more very soon. I would GLADLY buy this reel again at the 85$ sale price I got it for. ... and will almost certainly justify getting one at +$100 when I next get the chance. At this point it is a 4 outta 5 for me- and that's only because I don't know anything about the models history or its durability. That's all I'm waiting on. Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Thanks for the info. I have a bunch of the older gold carbonlites and the black carbonlites and love them. Was gonna purchase the new carbonlite but got wrapped up in getting new swimbait setups. Will be getting a white one in the near future! 1 Quote

That rod will make you drop that Veritas like it's hot and puts the old Carbonlites to shame. 1 Quote
kikstand454 Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 ^^^^ I haven't even held one in the store yet. I don't go to bps often. We have an academy and a dicks and their prices and selection keep me out of bps for the most part. Ill definitely have to go check them out though! Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted January 16, 2015 Super User Posted January 16, 2015 I got my grandpa a Johnny Morris Carbonlite for his B-day and a couple months later the drag completely broke, So we sent it in and they sent a new one and now that one is broke too and in need of repair. It was very light and smooth but doesn't hold up well at all, But that was the old carbonlite I guess. Quote
kikstand454 Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 ^^ good to know. Ill keep an eye out for it. If the drag were to be the only weak link....id be ok with that. 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted January 16, 2015 Super User Posted January 16, 2015 Well the first time it was the drag, now the button won't automatically come back up when you reel, instead you have to push up on the bottom of the button to help it alittle, and if you pull the line sometimes it will release for no apparent reason and go into free spool... I dunno what would cause that but I'm gonna send it to a local guy and maybe he can fix it. Quote
kikstand454 Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Ahhhh. ...... yeah occasionally my curados will have that button problem. Its normally a part in there that gets all gunked up and won't operate right. I get corrosion on that part from the salt if i dont keep an eye on it ( clean it every 6wks or so). Sometimes though, that part is broken and needs replaced. Can't remember what its called. Your reel guy should be able to fix it. 1 Quote
