Hello, I am 13 years old and my mom's boyfriend is into fishing. Now, I am going to buy him a fishing rod as a gift for christmas. Although, I do not know anything about fishing except for the really common beginner stuff. I came here to get some expert advice from experienced fishermen. I dont think he is a hardcore fisherman, it is just a fun hobby for him. So please let me know what is the best fishing rod for under 50-75 dollars. All the help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum young man. Are you buying just a rod or trying to get him a rod reel combo? Does he use spinning or casting gear? Does he fish for bass or just fish to catch fish?

Can I safely assume you are looking for both a rod and reel totaling that price?

EDIT: Rippin posted while I was typing.  :teeth:

Also I want to welcome you to the forum as well.

Thank you for the replies, he is looking for a combo, spinning gear, and he just fishes to catch fish. Oh sorry forgot to mention that yes both a rod and reel totaling that price.

Shimano makes a good low priced spinning reel. Just pick one that fits in your price range. I use the $30-40 ones on my river rod and truck rod. Have held up to years of fishing. Match that with a rod that fits and you are set. Maybe a Berkley Lightning rod.

Pflueger Trion size 25 spinning reel, 6' ultralight (UL) Bass Pro Shops Microlite Glass spinning rod, and a spool of 6lb P-Line flouroclear should put you at around 70$. A very nice setup for a small price.

Can't go wrong with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik combo. At Walmart they run about 40 bucks and they're indestructible.

Height has no affect on the length of the rod for the type of fishing you mom's boyfriend will be doing unless he will be fishing among a lot of trees and bushes.  In that case shorter would be better.  A 6' to 6'6" spinning rod should do nicely.  I would also look at the combos offered by Cabela's, BassProShop and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Amazon has a Mitchell 300 7' Medium spinning combo for $69.99 and Walmart has the same combo except with a 6' Medium rod for the same price.  I am not familiar with the new Mitchell 300 reels, but my first spinning reel 60-1/2 years ago was a Mitchell 300 that I used for a good many years.

A longer rod will normally deliver a longer casting distance which can sometimes be important from shore.  7' to 7'3" rods have become favorites of mine for that reason.

What would you guys recommend for the length of the rod? My mom's boyfriend is about 5"8-5"9.

6'-7' should work nicely.

How about getting him a gift certificate?? A family member got me a rod that I use but it would not have been my first choice, I think I would have liked the gift certificate so I could use it for something else or apply it to the rod I want. I really like what you are going to do and the thought behind it but if your mom's boyfriend is a hardcore angler, he more than likely uses higher end stuff that cost a lot more, but a gift certificate for Bass Pro or Cabelas would mean a lot too and he can get something he would want.
