Chance_Taker4 Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Please help need a new high gear ratio reel for frog firing. I got $200 anything but shimano. If you can suggest a reel cheaper than $200 I would be appreciative. Thanks Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 Right now you can get a Fishing 13 *** for under $200 with a 8:1 ratio at TW with the sale. Have an A and a C concept and they are great, Have 30lb braid and fish frogs with mine as well as punch grass.....probably step it to 40lb, but might look at them. Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Awesome thanks I've been intrigued with the new 13 reels I've heard mixed reviews on them Quote
Super User Angry John Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 You can get a zillion 7.1 from tw for 191 out the door right now. 1 Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Would definitely recommend the zillion at 191 Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 8.6oz for the Zillion vs 6.1oz for the ***. Same avg IPT, Zillion holds a bit more line, C has a lot more drag.......two good arguements and excellent reels under the price range while on sale for what your looking for. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Under 200, get a Tatula Type R 8 gear casting reel. They can be found for under 150 quite easily. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 The price point you're at is arguably the most competitive. You'd have to almost try to go wrong. It comes down to features you prefer and the deal. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 There are tons and tons of good reels that could be bought with 200$ or less, I'd recommend the tatula its great for frogging and I like that its alittle bulky, gives you alot to grab onto when reeling those bass outta the slop! also it can be had for alot less than 200$! 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 For frogging, that zillion deal really looks attractive. Throw on some HawgTech's to boot and you got yourself a real deadly frogging reel. Quote

I love my daiwa advantage htsl for this, even though its only 6.3 it has been a tank and still works like a champ. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Spend your money on the Zillion those reels are very well made, have been around for a good while, and if 8 oz is more than you can handle on a reel.. Well good luck... See how long the *** has been around.. Who cares if it's light, I wanna see it's dependability in say, 3, 5, 10 years.. You can't go wrong with Daiwa or Shimano.. 1 Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Under 200, get a Tatula Type R 8 gear casting reel. They can be found for under 150 quite easily. X2. Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 The new lews super duty 8.0:1 would be a great choice as well. You can get one at TW for around $140 with the Black Friday sale. 1 Quote

Basseditor Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Under 200, get a Tatula Type R 8 gear casting reel. They can be found for under 150 quite easily. I got a new Tatula R and tested it on Lake Falcon. I spooled up with 25-pound line. I was impressed. I can see it working with 65-pound braid for frogs. I got it on eBay for about $125. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 haha. x2.when he said anything but shimano I thought to myself "well my suggestion just went down the toilet" Same here. I have never used a Tatula, but that's probably closest I can get for a quality reel...even tho it is too large for my taste.... Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 Tatula type R 8:1:1 - $125 Zillion 7:1:1 - $191 I have both and either are great reels. The zillion is a proven workhorse. The tatula is newer but has proven itself too so far. Don't feed too much into the lightweight argument. My frog rod is a 7'3 heavy and it balances out better with a heavier reel. As for the drag ratings. Well 8lbs of drag is more than enough. Those high drag numbers are marketing gimmicks. My purchase would be a tatula R and a spool of #50-65 braid. You'd have some money left to pick up some more frogs. 2 Quote
mjseverson24 Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I like the Tatula 7:1 or the lews Super Duty 7:1. I go with the 7:1 ratio to keep a good balance of speed and power when using frogs... Mitch Quote

My purchase would be a tatula R and a spool of #50-65 braid. You'd have some money left to pick up some more frogs. I have both as well. However, the Tat Type R is new and been out just once. It is the 8.1:1 and although I didn't use a lure with any resistance to speak of, I was impressed by how effortless the retrieve was. Nor do I see the weight of the Zillion being a problem as long as you don't have any physical disabilities, and it should balance a frog rod better than a light reel. Both are good looking reels, but the Tat looks like it might have a tougher finish. I personally love its looks. I am a fan of Daiwa, but not a fan of some of the finishes they have used over the years. Quote
desmobob Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I have a pair of the Tatulas, one in 7:1 and one 6.4:1. They impress the heck out of me. Compared to my Lew's Tournament Pros, they feel "heavy," but they are incredibly smooth, great casters, and feel very solid; like they'll last a l-o-n-g time. The Tatula is one of those few things I've purchased where I felt I got more than I paid for. You could get two of them for your budget, or the "R" version with money to spare for line/lures/etc. Tight lines, Bob Quote
